Shock recommendation?

Well, it obviously depends on how much money is available. But in general, with shocks, you get what you pay for. There is a big, big difference between the performance of a KYB and a Koni/Bilstein/Ridetech, even when new. But you have non-working dampers on your car now and you only have $150 in your bank account, then KYBs are better than nothing.

And even the KYBs are better than a lot of other brands.

Hmmm, what is the best tire, the best oil, the best anything. Whe answer is "it depends". For daily cruising use the consensus is Bilstein HD. I replaced the stock Delco-Bilstein's on my 100k mile 95 with KYB's and couldn't be happier. It rides like I want my C4 to ride and is substantially quieter. Much less rattling. Net cost after rebate was $80. For the kind and amount of driving I do this will probably be the last set of shocks this car sees. Now if I planned on another 100k miles or I was going to road race I'd probably want to get those . There are plenty of guys who run Monroe Matics with no problems. Shocks are just not worth spending a lot of money on unless you are a racer. For average road use KYB's work great.

Then why did GM decide to install them on the car in the first place? Surely GM didnt expect all Vette buyers would be "racers"....

The problem with many people is they fantasize that because a product is coming from a good place, it is the same item as the one in a cheaper box. Thing is, just because 2 parts came from the same company or factory doesn't mean they are made to the same specs. One could be the prime stuff and the other be in the "almost rejected barely passable" category.

Intermediate
My stock Delco - Bilsteins were shot after sitting for many years. After checking prices and considering my retiree budget, opted for KYB's. Agree Bilsteins are the primo shocks, but KYB"s delivered from Rock Auto for less than 2 bilsteins just made sense for me. My 95 'vert is a beach cruiser with an occasional trip up Angeles Crest and they work for me.

I tried the (original) Bilsteins, Edelbrock IAS, and KONI Sports. The KONI's were the best by far, offering a good ride (after some adjustments) with superior wheel control.
If you get the KONI's, and want to know the settings I settled on, PM me.
KYB, Bilstein, KONI, QA-1......it all depends what your budget is. Just remember; you get what you pay for.

The FX3 Bilsteins rode very harsh and stiff. They were horrible. I replaced them with the Koni Yellows Single Adjustables about 23 years ago on my 93 Ruby. You'll definitely will like the Konis. The new Koni Golds are worth a try.
