Default 1996 climate control question

I have a GS that has a mild case of the issue that plagues the 96 model year cars. It ends up blowing out of the right vents after a minute or 2 and really isnt a big deal as i rarely drive the car. My question is is the issue tied to both the base hvac system and the optional electronic system? Im looking at buying base lt4 car and if the base system is more dependable i would look in that direction

I know the issue is caused by collapsed vaccum lines but i am not sure if both systems share the same guts behind the dash. Hoping a C4 guru might be able to help

Thanks

sounds like a different issue than on my 93, where it wont turn off.

the solution (for my problem) is pushing on the face of the climate control unit.

i think it frshens up the circuit pin contacts (into their receptable) and fixes it.

again, i realize yours sounds like a difft problem but keep my solution in mind !!

The 96's have a well discussed and documented issue where the air blows out of the windshield defroster vent regardless of what is selected on the control unit. Mine does this for a minute or two before switching over to the vents that blow air towards tge passengers

This thread documents the problem and the solution (check the posts on page 3 to get pictures -- the earlier ones timed out and got deleted by Forum maintenance):

I would assume since both systems use buttons to direct air flow, both use the same troublesome controller.

Yeup, you have to remove lower hush panel on driver side, Remove hvac controller, and clip the nips!
