Default Painting "fun"

hello!

ive been redoing my 87 vet. And I just wanted to share some pictures 👍 It's been a ton of work but it's coming around awesomely! Still gotta get the handles off and do some more priming! But in time... thought you guys might enjoy these pictures!
Just in case I ever accidentally sell...

Here's the original vet! I'll probably go with the original color because... well it's all original expect the exhaust. Which sounds pretty cool

Kevin, did you sand or chemical strip? I assume you are painting the belt moldings the same color as the car.

It's gonna be the original color! The pictures make it look better then it was. It really was a 10 footer paint job, so I'm hoping I can do a better job painting. I may have it professional sprayed (not sure). And actually I am not painting the black side molding it is covered (taped) well. Finally I used all methods. Razor blades, dual action sander, block sander, and chemical stripper (but only metal parts). I found that citristrip was messy and not very effective! Oh I also had the bumpers media blasted it costed 200 but it was better than sanding them... Thanks for the replies, here's a picture of some of the damage the car had. I was rear ended last summer ☹️

Nice work and good on you taking on the project!

HOWEVER I see a guy with a paint gun and a DUST mask. Not good. Not sure of the products you're using but please get an appropriate paint mask. Modern 2K paints contain chemicals you don't want in your lungs. So just be aware and be careful or it will bite you later.

Enough on the safety. Keep up the good work. A good to great paint job can be done at home. There have been threads here that show it. You can also go to the paint forum here and check out what DUB says, he seems to really know his stuff. Looking forward to your progress.

And this is the reason you hardly ever see old painters.

Yikes! I ordered a correct respirator off of amazon! hopefully being outside and painting nulled some of the effects.

3M makes a good one. Keep it in a gallon ziplock bag when you aren't using it.

I've painted several cars over the years and using acrylic paint is much easier if you're painting at home, but much more work to get a really deep shine.
2 pak certainly gives a better result, but the danger of damaging your lungs is very real.
It's recommended to use a quality breathing mask and have good ventilation, which brings another problem. Enamels take time to dry which gives every bug in the neighbourhood time to land on your fresh paint job.

I agree. On a Base coat/clear coat system you can probably get by painting the base out side IN THE SHADE and the sand the bugs off with 1500 grit but the clear should be done in a building that is clean of dust. Use a water hose on the floor.
