Enjoy the trip/adventure! Trying to convince my wife to take our '92 with 43K miles to Tennessee where we had our honeymoon. At first she said it would be no fun without a radio, so I fixed/upgraded that. Now she wonders if it would be reliable, so instead taking my boring 2008 Civic with 162K miles.

My wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary with a trip to Destin, FL this year. We took our 2013 Elantra which I kind of regret. Then again we hit a dog going 70 on the interstate and did $2K in damage to the Elantra. Maybe it was the better option.

I hope the OP has a good safe trip. I spend too much time on here reading about people's breakdowns to feel comfortable with a trip like that.

Thanks to everyone on this forum that have provided me with an insight into the problem areas of the C4...you have ruined me.

That's a good idea about the bag. I will pick one up, along with some other travel essentials you guys have detailed here.

It's a long way and I'm worried about it. Worried enough I think I might overkill a little bit and pickup an AC and Air Pump eliminator, just to have them on board.

One thing I do know that will stop you cold is a serpentine belt that won't turn.

I have a list about a page long of just little things.. Zip ties. Stuff I have here but am not used to carrying with me.

Thanks again. The people of CF are first rate.

Any advice?

Other things to take? Other considerations?

I've never done anything even remotely like this before, so if you start to type something and think: "Nah.. That's stupid. I won't mention that." Go ahead and type it.. Because I really don't know. It's all uncharted territory for me.

Questions:

Good hotels on the strip with smoking (vaping) and a balcony?

Anybody use a dashcam? You like it?

Radar Detector even worth considering at this point?

Should I put a GPS on the car?

Other Thoughts?
Why asking about a GPS and a detector?

You are going out of state driving thru different states with speed traps.

Yes get a GPS, the smartphone works as long there is data coverage.
The GPS find places faster
Install Waze in your phone
Yes, get a detector

Tools
Car wash items
Music
Satellite radio
Cooler
Jump cables
Shop Towels

This is how it looks like when I hit the road

Regarding hotels policy on nasty smokers, visit their websites.
I'm a non-smoker and there is nothing more repugnant than an a-hole smoking next to you.

Word on the alternator. It would be worth throwing one in there just in case.

About that handgun. I have a 44 I would love to take, but I'm worried it would cause problems if I am stopped.

I dunno the laws from state to state. I could bolt it to the hood here and drive around and nobody would care and the cops would wave..

Other states might drone strike me or something..

Yeah.. I'll just leave it there.

Interested in what others thought.

I'm scared of some screwy law or something causing problems. So, I'll probably leave it home.

I can only imagine a couple of worse alternatives to this trip than to be in trouble with the LEO half way across the country.

You can check the laws in the states you'll be transiting quite easily these days thanks to the internet...

Serious question.. Is theft an issue?

Anyone who knows C4's would be after my car for scrap metal..

But, are they stolen a lot by people who don't post here?

(Anyone who posts here would steal it, drive it around the block. Return it. And then leave a note of things to fix and generalized critique of the car, along with comment about how I paid too much for it and an admonishment that I should have got a C5 instead.)

It would be relatively easy.

Is this a problem?

If you are really worried about theft just pull the FP relay overnight. Not to start a debate, but if you are ever stopped by LE with a handgun in the car inform them immediately. If they search the car for some reason and find it later it will not be a good thing.

Yeah, it won't be a problem on this trip. I'm not going to take it.

The cops around here see people cracking walnuts with them and wave, cause it's a place like that..

But everyplace ain't like that and I'm not doing it.

Thanks though!!

Default Road trip

You worry to much...I drive truck for a living. The people I see broke down along the road are all tire related. Check tire pressure every morning, before tires are warm. You know your car.....It's always nice to think ahead...(What if?) But if it's your day for something to break, only the crystal ball knows....I have pictures in my mind of rear luggage rack bolted on, roof rack, pulling a trailer with spare motor and tires...LOL...Pack light, GPS helps, Don't drive stupid to p### off cops. You will be fine. Enjoy your trip

There's a lot of good advice on this thread. Things I didn't think about. Thanks to all who chimed in to help.

After reading IHBD's experience with the spare, I may do something with the tires anyway.

AAA premium membership secured and a room is booked at the Rio.

Looks like we're going.

Thanks again, all.
It looks like your good to go then. I drove the whole way with the cruise set at 5 over posted speed limits (ok I may have hit triple digits once in Utah on the way back) and never had an issue. I packed a tool box with metric wrenches 6-18mm, metric sockets 6-18mm, a ratchet to move the tentioner to replace the belt, flashlight, pocketknife, hammer, a few screwdrivers, and a big flathead screwdriver.
As for the gun even if you have a CHL you are good in most states but I wouldn't go through IL packing heat.

What happened in the last picture. That's an awful lot of stuff for just to remove a wheel.

Hi

Check your universal joints, half shafts especially close to wheels.
They tend to start squeaking at first, also the fuel pump they are cheap perhaps put a spare in the compartment.

I have dash cam with gps tracking, is great in case of an accident the video with gps speed is the proof you need.
Or in case a policeman tells you you were speeding , without video with gps speed stamp you cannot fight it .
Good luck, enjoy the road trip

I've done several cross-country trips in mine. Here's my tips.
Advice on air compressor and tire plug kit is spot on.
Radar detectors make it interesting but is all but useless in warning you of law enforcement (seems that every other 18-wheeler has a radar unit these days).
Plan to stop early, especially when going west and facing the setting sun each evening. Stopping early (5-6PM) lets you have more choices of motels/rooms, and lets you catch a meal and get to bed at a decent time.
Get back on the road early in the AM.
Make sure all fluids are good before you leave, and then don't worry about them again until you get back home (unless, of course, your particular C4 has a history of consumption).
Enjoy.
