Targa bar/opera bar strength
Fast Question. Local high school wanted a convertible to ride the Grand Marshall in a parade that would last about 1/2 hour. Nobody in the local clubs seems to be stepping up to volunteer their car. Is the bar on a coupe (mine) strong enough to hold a person without damage? I would put a towel or blanket on top so it wouldn't scratch.

Because of the roll over standards I would think it would hold a lighter person. Without damage IDK I have never been asked to try it.. Not much to hold on to is a worry.

Yes, it will be plenty strong for an adult to sit there. A blanket or thick towel is a good idea. But one issue will be where the rider places his/her feet. Have them sit near the passenger side and ask if they could remove their shoes. It's a good idea to have a towel available to place on the seat too.
The passenger seat can move forward far enough so that the rider can step into the floor pan behind the seat, and sit down on the bar.

I've got a convertible but one thing to think on is if you have someone sitting on a targa bar, what are they going to hold onto if you take a turn or hit the brakes? How do you keep them from falling off?
If someone on top got hurt, who's insurance are they going to be going after? Who would be liable for any injuries?
Personally I'd be more inclined to have them sit down in the seat as there seems to be a lot of potential liability if something went sideways while they were sitting on top.

yes, this is doable. Reasonable not so sure... just drive them around normal or ask other vette guys to help out.
i would not personally volunteer, but if someone explained the same scenario to me I would just help out with my car too.
Not in to schools or parades, but I would do it no big deal. Maybe someone else you know is the same.

Now...have a look at this insanity that I participated in....

THANK YOU all for your reply. Think I'll give it a try if they already didn't have someone step up with a vert. It is slow going and more often than not the parade is at a snails pace or stopped. If Im picked to help I'll make sure the boy (Grand Marshall) keeps one hand on the bar at all times and waves to the crowd with the other.

life's a compromise, how about a stack of cushions on the seat so that the person sitting there can be seen and wave to the adoring multitudes?

Again, thanks to all for an answer. Turns out it's a moot point right now. They still don't have a vert but from what I found out, the Grand Marshall will be waving to the crowd with his family so it wasn't just him, his significant other and child will be with him so not enough room in the Vette to ride safely. I told them if they found another car to take that family and there's someone in the parade who's waving alone to give me a call. So I'm on standby just in case.
