Default Installing headers in the garage

I've been wanting to purchase headers for my 1989. Is it a major pain to do an install in the garage while up on ramps? How high off the ground would be best to get the job done? I'm able to have a shop do the install but feel the need to save a few bucks on this if I can. The Melrose C4 header system is what I want to put in.

Thanks, Went

First off, and this is only my opinion,,, you made a very wise choice with Melrose, I have them on my '85 and they fit like a glove. You will need to get it probably 16 to 18 inches off the floor, put down a blanket to protect the new finish and lay the header down with the flanges facing the outside of the car and the collectors the opposite way. Pick up the flange end and slightly lift the front of the header and just lift it up into the chassis, tilting the back down as you go higher. Once you get the header up in place either keep a flange bolt with you to put in from the bottom or have a buddy start one from the top. Once you let go of the header it may fall right back out, that's how nice they fit. If you haven't already figured out the rest of your exhaust, the Melrose system fits like the headers do and tuck up into the tunnel so they will not be damaged by scraping them on the ground. If I can answer any questions just pm me.

Cool Runnings thinks your talking about installing a heater, not a header. Can't read.

You shouldn't have a problem installing headers in your garage. Many do it, no issue.

Please let me know how everything goes and if you notice any performance gains. I am looking to install a full exhaust system on to get a little more performance, yet still have a nice sound.

I can tell you right now, there will be gains but that will depend on what ,if any other engine mods you have.

That's how I did mine, no problems at all. In fact I prefer jackstands, ramps only go so high and it may not be enough.

No problem installing headers in the garage. I pull my motor every other year for a freshenup and pull the heads on off years. My headers have been off at least once a year for a couple of decades. Nothing beats jackstands on a carpeted garage.

I humbly disagree, I'll see your jack stands and raise you one two post lift.

Another garage install here, not that bad. The driver side can go down from the top but the passenger side is the pita. It has to go in from the bottom. I forgot when the behemoth starter disappeared. My 86 had it and I replaced it with a later style mini starter. The other issues are the alt and ac brackets and the dip stick tube. Also, you will need to add a heated O2 sensor.

Good luck. You will really be surprised by the increase in performance.

The O2 sensor needs to be heated? Is that different than the stock O2 sensor? The Melrose headers have the bung on either side for the sensor.

Thanks, Went

Yes because the O2 sensor is going to be located much farther downstream than stock. I bought this one

And a three pin weatherpack connector

For power I used a tap a fuse and chose an ignition powered fuse. I think I went off the instruments fuse if I remember correctly.

It's just power, ground and signal wires.

It can be done in a garage. IMO the ramps are ot high enough to slide all the way down to the connections after-the catalyst.

I assume you will take the Vette to a muffler shop to do the rest of the connections.

How many amps will the O2 sensor pull? On the fuse holder is 12 AWG wire sufficient? I have some parts at my place of work I can buy... resistors, logic chips, microprocessors, diodes and such stuff.

Thanks, Went
