Default Jet DST OBDII Tuning Suite Questions

Has anyone used it? Is it worth investing in? I’m doing a mild build this winter and really don’t care for mail order tunes, I’d rather buy the tuning software and pay to have it tuned.

Planned build is Cam, Ported Heads/Intake, and Headers.

I’ll add that I have a 1996 LT-4.

I got my JET DST off eBay last year. I have used it to turn my fans on at the temperature I wanted, eliminate CAGS, and bump the timing up very slightly. My mods are cold air, 1 3/4" headers, and a full 3" (Billy Boat Fusion) exhaust (headers back).
I have a 96 LT4 also. I figure since I plan on keeping my car it was worth purchasing in case I make any more engine mods.
The program is not user intuitive but gets the job done.

I guess you need to ask yourself what your plans for the car are. If you are racing and making mods every month, it might be best to self tune otherwise it gets expensive. OTOH, if you make mods for a street car and leave it for years, why bother investing the time to learn it and dyno time to see what it does, rinse and repeat to hone your craft? I have run the same combination for quite a few years. I don't plan to change the intake radically or cams or heads unless I have to. So why bother? Let someone dyno tune it. I take it 5 hours away on a tow dolly. I haven't done that in years. How is it profitable for me to learn how to do it on a dyno? Some jobs are easier and cheaper farmed out.

I just don’t know anywhere around here that Dyno tunes this ECU situation.

Know anywhere in Metro-Atlanta by chance?

Maybe Dynojet will know since they sell dyno machines?

I have found a lack of tuners in the greater Akron Oh. area that still do LTx engines. In fact, one of the places I contacted told me to "Buy a Jet unit, then I can tune it on my dyno". A lot of places don't have the proper equipment other than the popular and/or best recommended ones on the web.

One of the better known companies also told me if I purchased a Jet unit, they could provide tunes at a better cost.

I am going to purchase one myself in the next few weeks along with a refurb Windows XP laptop. I still have lots of copies of XP and boxes to run the software on, but it is a pain to carry a desktop to the garage and set it up. I do have a 100 mbs wired network in the house so I can simply run a cable to the garage and hook the laptop to it if need be.

That’s my exact plan. You can get a refurb XP Laptop for next to nothing.

I have used the DST software and interface a bit, and it's basically the same interface as good old Tunercat (except that it's specifically made to work with the 96's OBD2 PCM). So in terms of how to use it, pretty much any advice for Tunercat will also apply to DST. It works well, and gives you maximal ability to change calibrations. My only advice is to try to make sure you get the newer interface that connects directly to USB ports, rather than the older serial connector. For the latter, you'd need to buy a separate serial-to-USB adapter. It's not a big deal, but can be a hassle to find one that works with the Jet software (you need an FTDI-chip adapter).
