Default '86 Smog Free?

So, if I replace the entire exhaust system on my car (no A. I. R. system, no pre-cats, no cats, but keep the oxygen sensors) will the motor still run great with no codes thrown to mess thing up? Thanks.

Leave the AIR system. It takes up room but causes no drain on your system.

Focus on the exhaust side as you mentioned; your car will love you.

In installed headers on my 86. Air not hooked up. True duals, no cats, runs fine. Kept OXY sensor.

Yes, I have done it and it is fine. I removed it all, AIR/EGR/precats. I left the main for awhile, then removed it as well for true duals.

You can get an EGR code 32 on the highway, but you can either ignore it or take it out in the chip tune, or the Diode Trick (run a search).

You must keep the O2 sensor however.

When I installed headers, X-pipe and true duals on my '87 autocross car, I tossed the AIR system and added the TPiS pulley. The pre-cats and the main cat got tossed too. At the same time, I removed the A/C compressor, lines, and condensor. I did have to go to a serp belt that was a good 2 inches shorter.

I installed the O2 sensor in the left side header reducer and didn't even need to lengthen the wire. I didn't remove the EGR valve from the intake but I did remove the pipe that had gone to the passenger side exhaust manifold. Nothing else was changed and there were no problems with the engine. No codes and the engine ran fine.

Great info again. Thanks!

Sensors? I don't think so. You have 1 sensor. If it is old, just toss it and get a fresh one. You can run without the AIR system but you should get a pulley to eliminate it to clean up the system. It will run great with no codes. You also will have to plug up the line going to the cat which is easy. Cut it off at the cat and put a metal plug there.

I did the same exact set up. The cars runs much better. In my opinion freeing up the exhaust is one of the best mods for a C4. The headers make a huge difference. I just hollowed out the air pump and removed all the emission tubing. I didn't like the pump delete kit. I did install a heated O2 sensor.

Just my own experience...Good Luck

I thought headers help the L98 a lot but not so much on the LT1 or does it make a drastic difference on both?

I have only driven a few LT-1's with headers. You do notice an improvement but; not the same as a L-98. Now I didn't drive the LT-1's like I do my car but; I got on it some. The L-98 was a huge difference with headers on my car. I still feel it was the best mod I did. A good set of headers was well worth the money to me.

What headers did you use? Long or short? Thanks

AFAIK short is only if you have to be in CA or smog **** places. Not worth the effort, IMO.
