here is a video of my wife driving my 87 z52 over a rock

Melting Slicks
In an hour long drive with my girlfriend (me in the vett her in her car) I was originally ahead of her, half way through I decided to give it some gas and lost her on the highway, once we got off I pulled into a parking lot. I waited a minute or two for her to pass and pulled out right behind her and was on her bumper for the last 30 or so minutes of the drive, she didn't know ANY of this had happen until I passed her in my driveway, she was confused to say the least.

My wife told me she has 0 intention of ever driving my vette...
That might have something to due with me commenting when someone else asked to drive it, and i flat out told them that if anyone else wrecked it but me, i would likely never forgive them...
However i put my a TON of work into my car...
She might also be a little scared to drive it, to much pedal and it will sidewards real quick, I'm still learning to control it.
so far it's been a combination of shock, fear, and a bunch of woohoo!
sometimes it looks like i actually meant to drift the car when doing a left hand turn... 😊(i need better tires lol)

First, very sorry to hear about the road hazard.
Second, she's used to an SUV, which in many ways is kind of the polar opposite of your car. Out of her depth in a C4. Karen, my navigator and co-pilot, alerted me to a turn this week just as we were passing it at 55. You should've seen how big her eyes got when I slot-car turned onto that road we nearly missed without skipping a beat. I just shot her a Corvette grin and kept going.
Third, it doesn't look that bad to me in the photos. I'd have a frame shop take a look.
If you hadn't jumped in her sheet so badly at the time, I think you could've milked the situation better long term. Just sayin'.
Good luck!

Viking, The post rock hit commentary on the video was awesome.
I doubt that anything could have saved the car from the rock, as bam there was a rock in the middle of the road.
We have pretty interesting roads here in Alberta, I've had rocks that size go thru my windshield off a semi hauling equipment off a lease. Smashing my entire windshield out. I was working up north/out of town and drove the truck for another day or two (maybe 1000km). Boy that was fun, as I knew another rock would had taken my head off.
I also had a log fall off a logging truck and land into my windshield., that was up north of peace river.
The C4 is still fixable, I'm sure you can make it better than new. Glad everything turned out well and your still married. Probably need a room with two beds that night in Banff.
Thanks for sharing the video.

Thanks for all the comments. There have been some great ones ive gafawwed at.
The rock was was easily avoidable. she saw it a long way back while my eyes were looking through the iphone screen it was a tiny spec.
no matter though its all good.
i deleted the last 13 minutes of the video where she is pretty devastated and apologetic. our discussion (which was not as animated as my initial wtf moment)
was recorded by accident because i had set the phone on the dash after the strike and we immediately pulled over and the phone recorded 13minutes of us doing a thorough inspection of the car. iy was quiet enough without the car running that you could hear us in the distance talking it all over. it was funny to listen to her surprise and amazement at how low the car is.
the best is when i asked, "so how was the steering wheel"?
her "its fine"
me after looking in the car "oh, ahh, its off by 180 degrees and the horn button is in the back" (yes it blew the horn button into the cargo area, im planning on a new steering rack)
her "what!!? i didnt even notice"!

Tractor trailer drivers are instructed to HIT what evewlks in front of them (not people of course). Its cheaper to fix a truck than roll one. Its easy to get distracted or forget that your driving a vete instead of her 4x4.. juat happy no one was hurt

It could have been far worse and I think she did OK, even taking that chastising from you such as "WTF Jess" x2. Not my business, I'm just saying she took everything pretty well -- many women would be a nervous wreck and totally shaken up after that. I was going to say that you don't realize how good you have it, but watching the whole video it's clear that you love and appreciate her, and your children. Also the video is a good reminder how tough these cars are

Fortunately my wife is picky about her car. If its making a new noise, if the brakes don't feel right, if it vibrates, I hear about it.

My thoughts exactly. Maybe there was no oncoming traffic at that moment but a skidding car can travel a surprising time and distance. Ask me how I know.

I sorta want her to like driving the car, another C4 makes the most sense since i know my away around it so well now.
I'll probably just bring one home for her, i know it will have to be red... I think she will learn to love it.

The wife has been wanting a full convertible for a little while now, i have been trying to talk her into another C4 that i can register as vintage.

im right there with u guys. i find it sexy that she likes to drive vettes. i have no problem with her driving the cars. i *might* feel different if it was a ferrari or something but even then considering we are business partners and our wealth is tied to each other I would never say no to her! i dig that it is something we are doing together. somebody mentioned chastising as a description for my reaction. it wasnt chastising it was complete utter disbelief because we had just, like 15secomds before as recorded in the vid, talked about slowing down and avoiding rocks and then she proceeded to speed up and drive right over one lol. neither one of us are snowflakes and when either of us fails to use our HEAD we have to say something or who knows maybe we'll do it twice. Getting called out isnt a bad thing in our opinion. We are fairly libertarian in our world view though and have pretty thick skin. and not that im being argumentative, because i do respect peoples individual opinions, i would feel remiss if i did not offer up the opposing opinion about the "aw **** it, just hit it" mentality. its not a semi truck.imo, given the situation, wide open road, there was WAY MORE danger in maintaining speed and straddling that rock and hitting it.... than applying the brakes and practicing evasive manouvering as taught in defensive driving. If there was shoulder and heaps of traffic it would have been different. i have just completed a repair job on my roach c4 and the thickness of the floor pan is about 1/8th inch of fiberglass. That could easily have come through that part of the floor. mayhem to follow. If she had clipped the oil pan we could have lit the car on fire with hot oil on the exhaust. if she had been 3 " left it would have clipped the tire and THAT would have been trouble. i understand a loaded semi down hill on icy roads....but a person should consider different responses for different situations. we have eyes and we have control over the automobile. just my opinion, i appreciate and respect everone elses.edit: i swear i used paragraphs but for whatever reason my iphone seems to compress it to one big ru-on! sry!

based on the height of the impact up the cradle it was likely 6" tall and a bit wider than it was tall. no idea on depth but based on the area, likely cube-ish
in this area there is a pekisko limestone formation quarry where the rocks are used in concrete manufacturing and thier shape as they come out of the outcrop is sort of blocky.
We did our field school in university on this very section of road.
based on density of limestone, thats roughly 20lbs
limestone has a pretty badass hardness though.

Glad to see you and your wife were not hurt. Too many time’s evasive action ends up with personal injuries. My wife’s nickname in Curb Hopper. BMW should have her picture somewhere warning sales people not to sell her the wheel/tire package.
I would rather have her hit a rock than try to avoid it a speed. I can always get a new/different car, but my wife is not replaceable.
She will not drive any of my corvette’s, which is ok, but like I said I can always buy another car. Btw, her daily driver is a 650x convertible.

Ya know.... looking at it, it could have been a baseball cap or if you look at it in "negative" a possible black mark on the road.... Moving at 70mph, there is not a ton of time to contemplate exactly what it is.... by the time you get there, it becomes an "oh ****" moment...

It's hard to see the bigger pic at a moment like that; the bigger pic being that your wife and her feelings are way more important than the car. I know that I'd have likely reacted the same way that you did. Later, it's easier to get a better perspective on things, IMO.
At least it was an accident; I recently let my visiting brother borrow my 'Vette -he took it to SLC with my boy. In one trip, he curbed a rim and rammed the air dam into the earth multiple times. My boy told him to approach gutters slow and at an angle....my brother told him that "we don't have time for that"..then prceeded to stuff the nose into the ground through more gutters. Later, my brother told me that it's irritating when my 13 yo boy tells adults what to do (referring to telling him "how to drive"). I replied that "He knows what he's talking about. Perhaps you should have listened to him."
While my damage is not like yours, I now get to have a wheel reconditioned and install a new air damn...and in this case, it was all totally avoidable. There aren't many drivers AT ALL -men or women- who would be aggressive/confident enough to avoid that rock and maintain car control through the maneuver. I'm bummed about your car....I'm "rooting" for you to find a way to fix....or as others said, upgrade.
