Default LED Interior upgrade

I just finished an LED upgrade of three sets of interior bulbs on my 96 base coupe.

1.
Amazon Amazon

These were the bulbs I used in the rear. They are great and are plug and play. Much brighter.

2.
Amazon Amazon

These are the bulbs I used in my door lights. They are also great and plug and play.

3.
Amazon Amazon

These are the bulbs I used in the footwells. They are extremely bright and I love them but they are not plug and play. They are a little longer and do not make a good connection. I had to strip a 6" piece of stranded wire and pull off single strands of very thin wire. I then had to wrap each end maybe 20-30 times to keep the connection tight. While this was a pain it was well worth it to me.

All three of the bulbs are brighter and a much whiter light than stock. Dan

On the rear ones I did have to buy four. If anyone wants the other two for $9.00 shipped just PM me. Dan

footwell lights must be different in an 88. The ones I bought worked fine.

I bet they are the same and the ones I bought were just longer.

What are your plans for the "map lights" in the rear view mirror?

I can measure my stock ones and compare to the 44mm ones I bought if needed. When they were loose I just held the stock one next to the new one and the new one was way longer. I can't explain it.

The ones I bought were good on length maybe even slightly short. I had to push the end opposite the wires slightly to engage them creating a solid fit.

I chose to have mine work with the map light switch when I put in the LEDs.

The other option is to have them work with the door.

With incandescent you get both. LED you have to choose.

Well, more stuff I don't know about. I have no idea what you are talking about. Can you please explain this choosing process? Thank You, Dan

I also have read that's it's a little involve to replace these bulbs - not just remove a lens cover and R & R the bulbs.
If you install the LED bulbs and do nothing else how do the lights respond - off the door or off the switch?

I just went out and checked this out. The lights under the rear view mirror come on when the door is opened. With the key on I can turn them on with the mirror switch.

Was this with LEDs or Incandescent bulbs?

This is with LED bulbs in the rear cargo, door and footwell and the stock incandescent in the rear view mirror map lights.

The map lights on my 88 only come on with the switch on the mirror. I just changed the bulbs to LED yesterday. Huge difference. I ordered two different lumen LED bulbs for the console light that shines down (#74). PO had stuffed a piece of paper to block off the light from the console light, not sure why.

I' ve tried to reconcile how LEDs work in the mirror lamps with the wiring diagram at 8A-114 and can't.

Based on the diagram in my 1992 FSM the lights should work as follows:

With the switch on the mirror off, the lights should be controlled by the door switches and interior light switch. When the doors are opened the lights come on, with the doors closed, moving the dimmer lever fully up should turn them on as well.

With the doors closed, dimmer level not all the way up, the switch should turn the lights on in run start and bulb check.

With incandescent bulbs it works that way. I believe the diagram is wrong and the switch reverses polarity. Inputs A and B being swapped would explain this. When the weather is nicer I'm going to verify the circuit with a meter.

For certain the circuit functional description on page on 8A-114-10 is incorrect. It states power is supplied through the cruise fuse at all times. The diagram disagrees. If it were supplied at all times you could remove the key and leave the vanity lights in the sun visors or the map lights on and drain the battery.

i was sitting in the passenger seat with the door open to change them. All of the interior lights were on except for the map lights with the mirror switch in the off position. They only came on when I flipped the switch.

Looking at the wiring diagram it appears that the Header Map light, which I take to be the one in the mirror, only comes on with the switch. There is another smaller light, the console light, that is fed from the dimmer circuit. From what I make of it these are not on the Courtesy Light Delay Timer. Looking at diagrams on pages 8A-114-0 and 8A-114-2 in my 88 FSM electrical supplement.
