Default 2 license plates states

If you live in a State that requires front and rear plates do you have any problems with just rear?

Illinois is a two plate state. I have plates on both ends of my '88 coupe. And all my other cars, too. I simply don't know what the big deal is with two plates -- looks fine to me.

Technically, here at least, running one Illinois plate is cause to get pulled over and have to agree with that; you're breaking the law plain and simple just for the sake of vanity/ego. Folks who run with one may or may not get away with it, depending on the jurisdiction and how literally an officer interprets the infraction.

in the 5 years of driving my 95 Vette in Illinois, I never got stopped/pulled over for not having a plate. At a car show, a cop reminded me to reinstall the front plate before leaving the car show [wink, wink]. And, one other time a campus cop pulled me over for not having the proper parking sticker and also (by-the-way) mentioned my front license plate was "missing".

It is a ticketaible offense, apparently, but there's so much full-on crazy traffic chit going on in N Illinois that I don't think the local LEOs generally bother with a missing plate, if that is the only infraction to pull ya over for. But, the IL State Troopers, aka highway Natzis (great people, but super dedicated), don't seem to mind drinking cold coffee or eat stale doughnuts if it means having a chance to "gig" ya on something. (Maybe they have a ticket quota, like they do in Colorado?)

I display a front plate on my 90 Z, but only b/c I don't have a proper filler to go in its place...or I would use it and take my chances.

Your mileage may vary!

You really need to determine whether or not you care to pay the related fine and 'fees'. The fine in some instances isn't severe but based upon where the ticket is issued the fees can double or increase the total cost several $$$$.

Someone told me recently that a 9 MPH over speeding was $90 but the fees were $110 in addition to the offense.

In '80 I passed a VA trooper going the opposite direction on a divided highway and immediately saw him pull through the median and start my direction. I just pulled over pretty sure I was actually speeding and why make him chase me. I had just changed a rear gear but thought my calibration was correct. I of course asked why and he mentioned only the 'no tag' display.

He told me that something near 30% of the cars in a 2 tag state that don't display both are likely stolen or illegally registered. Pretty good excuse to get stopped!

I had the tag, new hardware and brackets in a plastic bag from a GM dealer that I thought might help if I were ever stopped. It did - no ticket and he actually paced me for about 3 miles back towards town to confirm my speedo.

COOL COP!!!

California is a two-plate state and my 4 Corvettes are plateless on the front and I haven't had a problem. Unless, you're a blonde female and don't look like a dirt bag most likely you won't get stopped unless the Cop is just out of the academy or you're driving around after mid-night.

I run just the rear plate. It can get you pulled over. Another concern is you are using the other plate on some other vehicle. I do keep the front one behind the passenger seat.

If you get stopped just tell the Officer that it is against the CC&Rs (Corvette Code of Regulations) to have a front plate on a Corvette.

For those in 2 plate states, a couple questions.

Is it a moving violation or an equipment infraction? Normally a moving violation will add points to your license. An equipment infraction here can be dismissed at the Police station with proof of compliance. At least here.

What is the purpose of the front plate? If an LEO is going to pull you over they will come from behind and see your rear plate.

BTW, here big truckslike dump trucks, tractor trailers, etc can run their single plate on the front.

When I bought my 2011, the first thing I did was have the dealership install a color matching front license plate bracket. No big deal to me and no tickets.

Reminded me of a day back in the early 80's when I was headed down to Watkins Glen for the IMSA races. I was in a VW GTI and was over a double yellow passing an incredibly slow car. A NY State Trooper crested the hill and I had to swerve to miss him. Went up the road and waited for him as well. I actually got off with a warning because I was active duty AF.

kali is a two plate state. Most cops ignore you until you get pulled over.

What is the purpose of the front plate?
A reflective surface for lasers. Also states are starting to increasingly use license plate scanners, both mobile and fixed.

South Dakota is a two plate state, but just last year they went to a one plate option for Corvettes and others, but it costs you more for the one plate option. Another money maker for the state like personalized plates.

Default front plate

New York requires 2 plates. Have never been pulled over for that. Modified exhaust? Yes.

Interesting article. If the intent is to really identify wanted vehicles, and considering the capabilities of big databases there really isn't a need to keep a record more than an hour or so.

Not sure they justify front plates though. Since all states have rear plates, positioning cameras to scan rear plates would make more sense.

There are mobile systems in place now that are connected to a DMV DB. A cruiser is driven around a parking lot to quickly ID any stolen or out of date tags. Can also be used on the roads to view oncoming traffic or parked at an intersection or traffic cams. I suppose they aren't concerned about motorcycles.

How soon will our cell phones or GPS units tattle us?

here in Ohio, a missing plate culminated in a man getting killed by the cops.

here is Ohio's revised code:

Colorado does require 2 plates....so far I've been lucky only running one, BUT, I drive my car maybe once a week... so the odds are good for me.... plus I dont drive like a moron so as to not attract attention to myself.

IL is a two plate state. One place that you will see enforcement is in the short term parking at O'Hare. You can walk through any day of the week and see tickets under the wiper...and sure enough, you will see that many of the ticketed vehicles don't have a front plate.

It is like shooting fish in a barrel. Lesson learned: attach your plate when parking at O'Hare even if you opt to not run one all of the time.

I have two plates on mine as required here in VA but I also have the front filler I’m thinking about using, no more than I drive it.
