L98 head gasket replacement cost
I have a 1987 L98. I have a coolant leak on the top of motor and seems to leak onto the exhaust from the back of the engine. Im having it checked this week. If it turns out to be head gaskets. What would be reasonable cost in Massachusetts? I’m hoping something simple but I can’t see what’s leaking. I noticed fluid on intake area above say the rear cylinders on the drivers side.

Hey there fellow MA resident! If you take an inspection mirror and look back there you should be able to see where it's leaking. My money is on the intake. Make sure none of that coolant is getting into your oil.

More than likely intake leaking. Check dip stick and oil cap for white and or bubbles. Check for white smoke while running, monitor coolant.
Start to look at threads on replacing gaskets on the TPI / RTV.

Replace both while it is apart. I learned the hard way. Had mine done at local chevy garage. The did an excelent job which I was interested. The other local shops were cheaper but wanted to keep the vette for months. Paid a little over 3K. Runs excelent. Make sure they mill the heads.
This was 9 months after doing intake. Those $$$ gone forever.

Pull the plugs on the suspected bank if any look new on the business end there is coolant entering those cylinders, the coolant instantly turns to steam & cleans everything in the cylinder.
Another failed head gasket test: Cold engine, start it & turn the AC on to run the coolant fan. Remove the radiator cap to avoid building pressure. Plug the end of the overflow hose, when the thermostat opens place a condom over the rad cap opening. If the condom blows up like a balloon you have combustion gas entering the cooling system.
Combustion gas in the cooling system normally includes a loss of coolant.
There is a sniffer available that will detect combustion gas in the cooling system.
Good luck

While it is not a small job, a head gasket is doable in a garage or carport as long as you are patient and follow the FSM completely. The intakes are part of that job and are less involved, if that is all you need. Just saying that this is not impossible for a determined DIY-er. The C4 clamshell hood makes access to the motor a lot less painful than some of the other generation Corvettes.

Thanks I’ve been busy at work and need to get going on this soon. All the responses are good advice.

Did it myself using a FSM, and if I can do it, anyone can. Lots of help here in forum. You will save big bucks, know the job is done right, and be proud of yourself all in one swoop
