can not shift into gear when depressing clutch.
1990 6 speed manual L98.Prior to this problem I tried to downshift fro 5th to 3rd and heard and felt a snapping sound, a cable breaking?I knew this could not be good.I was able to shift into 2nd (not easy) and was able to get home going no more than 20mph.The clutch depresses fine in order to start the car and I am able to shift through the gears with the engine not running. I was told that it is a clutch problem and not the transmission, that it could be the pressure plate and the throwout bearing. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Clutch slave or master cylinder. Typically they are replaced together. It's possible clutch slave is fouled and needs corrected since you said you heard a noise prior to this condition. It doesn't sound like the clutch is being actuated. The clutch assembly disc, pressure plate, flywheel, need service when they won't hold power or slippage is noticed. Slave cylinder is external and can be viewed with car is on a lift or jack stands.
