Default Bloomington Gold Benchmark Certification - ‘89 Callaway

Just paid the $1,400 (had no idea it was that expensive!) to get my ‘89 Callaway TT Convertible judged. I’m trying to get the highest Benchmark Certification, rules state you have to achieve Gold or Silver status on the same weekend to qualify for Benchmark.

The car is an amazing time capsule, of one of the baddest ‘89 Corvettes available, with a ton of options. Here are a few details about the car:
- red / red
- less than 1,200 miles
- original tires
- auto ($6,400 option with the Callaway)
- Convertible with optional hardtop
- 53rd Callaway with crayon markings still on the underside of the hood
- interior / exterior in mint condition

This will be my first attempt at getting a car judged at Bloomington, so any advise or tips would be greatly appreciated

Here are a few pics..

That is as an amazing 89 you have there. I have kicked around the idea of doing the same with my 96 Grand Sport and I think i will do it for its 25th birthday.

Good luck. I'll be at Bloomington and will be looking for your car.

Thank you, I sure hope it does. I’m sure I will obsess over the details as the time gets closer.

I know one of the previous owners of that car. I didn't spend time pouring over it but as a judge for BG, my initial reaction is that it will attain the cert.

Thanks!

One of the only things I'm aware of that's not original to the car is the battery, I've searched and haven't been able to find anything out on exactly which battery came in the car.

Well Bloomington is almost here, I’ve been pouring over the details on the ‘89 Callaway, trying to get ready for my first judging. I bought a set of collector edition wheels and tires for the road test portion of the certification, the original 1989 Goodyear Gatorbacks are in remarkable condition but still 29 years old.

I’m amazed at the condition of the car the more I have been around and under it.

I just spoke with the original owner and he was so excited to hear that the car had be preserved. He ordered the car and drove over to Callaway to see the car as soon as it arrived. He said the sticker price was right at $75,000, and still has a picture of the car on his toolbox, he took delivery with 300 miles on the car and only owned it for about 6 months and sold it with approx 700 miles on it.

I’m looking forward to Bloomington, I haven’t been in many years, I’ll post pics once it cleaned up and also when we get to to the show.

Good looking car. So much preparation. There is a good chance you may be parked right next to my red 89 vert at Bloomington next week. Have a good trip and see you there. - Mark

I know what you mean I have poured over this car for a few weeks and still haven’t driven it (ever) to make sure everything it working. That’s tomorrow afternoon, don’t expect anything, but you never know.

It would be great if they parked them together, that would be an awesome!

The ‘89 Corvette is pretty special to me since it was my first Corvette, it was white with black interior nothing special but it was a dream come true to get to own one.

What’s the mileage, story on your beautiful ‘89?

Believe it or not, I am the 5th owner. I found it at a consignment shop over 4 years ago. The car has just over 31,000 miles on it. I have been reversing all the changes the previous owners did to it for the upcoming show. Only going for the Survivor judging due to things like the stereo speakers and the security alarm not reversed yet. They place the C4s together as shown below in last years show.

Very cool, I actually drove my Callaway for the first time this afternoon, pretty cool to hear the turbos whistle (fortunately everything worked as it should).

Looking forward to the show next week and meeting a bunch of the Forum guys. This will be my first Bloomington trip in over 15 years.

Bloomington was amazing, met a ton of amazing people. The weather was a little damp but they adjusted and placed us under the grandstands.

The judges were top notch, courteous and truly enthusiast.

The Callaway received the Benchmark Certification with a gold score of 99.1%. Huge thank you to everyone who works to put the show together.

”Callaway Chris” actually presented the certification, he’s a very cool guy and I’m proud we had a chance hang out.

Here are a few pics from the show...
