Default 85 auto to zf6 conversion

I started a thread a couple days ago about flywheel/clutch combinations here:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-question.html

heres a few pictures of what I've got. Its a blue tag zf6 and all the parts from the same car. The only thing I didnt take was the flywheel, which im replacing with a factory 4+3 flywheel.

I'm spacing out the clutch fork to correct the clutch depth issue, and I made a new slave pushrod to make up the gap

My specialty clutch alignment tool

Your an ambitious person.
Someday you will direct that ambition towards something that's worth it.
For now though, keep the updates coming.

It seems you're well underway. You mentioned blue-tag so that would hint the housing would be 'Magnesium' and when used with the LT1/4 there were spacer/shim/insulator between housing/engine and housing/trans. Their relevance is sometimes disregarded or argued. I've done neither but I thought I would mention. Your snapshot of the housing doesn't display it so here's an assembly from FSM for LT1 and a snapshot of what I believe you 'should' find.

Awesome! You'll be happy with the zf6. It sounds like you know what you are doing so Ignore the negativity towards this swap. YES IT IS WORTH IT!!! I did it on my 86 years ago. Figuring out which parts you need is part of the fun. Would I do it again? You bet! It's not that complicated. It was a fun project and made my car much more enjoyable to drive. I love threads that show people what you can do and how you did it.

Thanks for the support and help!
I do have the shims, I just forgot to put them in the picture. I was wondering if they were inportant or not....

Hole is cut

The new starter compared to the old one. I had to grind a little off the new one to make is sit flush

Since im using the later car's clutch pedal, I had to modify it to make it fit. They look the same at a glance but they are definitely different shapes.

The transmission is in the car!

I still need a clutch hydrolic line (mine is leaking), the correct transmission oil, and a longer starter cable and it'll be ready to test!

How short is the cable? I think the later 'denso has a terminal adapter added to it that if removed might do what you need. Yours looks to have that terminal adapter. You're certainly moving along! Make sure you can remove the fill and drain plugs before you start the 'top off' or replacement. M17 HEX for removal.

its about 4" to 6" short. I saw someone mention in another thread that a longer starter cable was needed, but I didnt believe them until I got the new starter in... I'm not sure how I lost 6 inches. I guess its just the positioning of the newer terminals.

I'll say. Two days? You gotta be single. I used to bust out project like that, with that much ambition....now days things progress much more slowly, because...you know, life/family/job etc.

Nice work and effort. I'm digging the ambition and real progress.

Good work !

I have an 85 equipped with a ZF.

How is the shifter clearance with the original auto tunnel?

I will say you will find out more when you try to start it!

That FW is going to let you know real quick if it is the proper thickness for the transformation to the ZF.

Have up you changed the PROM? It won't stop it from starting, but there are some drive ability issues if you don't.

I converted my 87 auto to ZF way back. I did not change my prom, and did not have issues. But my car was quite modified already and the prom to match prior to ZF conversion.

The mods to the auto tunnel were quite minimal. Basically just the cut-out for the ZF shifter. The 89 console (or 4+3 console cover) works great with the shortened B&M shifter.

It's alive! I've been driving it all morning it took a new clutch master and some "adjusting" of the clutch linkage.

now I've got all the little things to finish up- reverse switch, speedo calibration, clutch switch, and making the interior look pretty. And a car wash is probably in order...

the shifter actually fits perfect in the tunnel.

A while back I bought an eprom emulator/programmer from moates that i've been dying to use. Now I get to try it out

How did you get the late wheels to "look right" (back spacing) on the early car?
