Who cares . Last time I checked it was a free world and people can buy what they want. If they want a C4 let them buy a C4 and they want a C5 let them buy a C5. Trying to convince someone out of a particular car once they bought is a futile effort. Here is a difference, the C5 is 1 digit higher then the C4
If you are going to ask this kind of question then you should ask specifics such as technical differences, differences in specifications, etc. Not just say blah blah vs. blah blah.

Re: C4 versus C5 (LT4_383)
I have had 2 C3's, 4 C4's and now 2 C5's and each have been great cars. If I had my way, I would own one of each generation. I liked the C4's for their tight feel when you set in them, the dash looked like a fighter jet, and the acceleration was very crisp. Little things like the difficulty in entry and the need to unscrew the targa top to get it off made it less user friendly.
I moved up to the C5 for the new design, better entry/exit, easier top removal, more room for both occupants and luggage, etc. I think I get a little better gas mileage in the C5.
Overall though, I certainly wouldn't mind getting back into a C4, especially a nice GS or ZR1. Would I give up my C5 to do so - perhaps for the right car. But right now, I am happy with the C5. Luxury minded or not, it is still a great Vette (as they all are).

NOTE TO SELF: That thing I've putting my change in for 5-years is a
...cup-holder. ;) :jester
Funny thing. I bought my 98 Coupe in December 97. At that time there
wasn't allot of C5's out yet(remember the 97 was a Jan 97 release).
Going on almost 5-years it's everything I thought it would be and more.
I always thought the 96' Grand Sport was hideous, then suddenly
something came over me and more and more I started to warm up to it.
My 98 has long been paid for and my wife is increasingly alarmed at my
96'GS...'would love to have one of those'...comments. If I buy another
and it's a C4 that's what it will be.
Good thread - never ending debate. We should all have a 58, 63, 67, 73, 96 and a 2002 Z06. Then, which one would be your daily driver?
Probably the old Honda - no rice jokes please.
And to the first reply: The LT1 and LS1 engines share the same block, but the LT1 is iron, the LS1 is aluminum so it weighs MUCH less and runs cooler. So there is at least one carry-over.
:bs :bs :bs :bs the ls1 and LT1 share NOTHING in common. the LT1 is very similar to the original SBC, but the LS1 is completely redesigned, it has a different firing order (the same firing order as a ford 5.0 by the way), has 15 degree heads instead of 23, etc. the only parts these engines share are a couple of bolts....
as to C4 vs. C5, i wont say which is BETTER, because it is all personal preference. before i bought my C4, i drove them both, and a '01 camaro SS, and to tell the truth, i was as close as the hair on a frogs back to buying the camaro, but i just think it looks like a chrysler concorde, and the engine is buried under the windshield...its not a musclecar by my definition. so i drove the two vettes, and dont get me wrong, the C5 rides better and all that, but its a little TOO refined for my tastes...so i bought the C4. that car just gets my adrenaline flowing like none other. you actually feel like you are a part of the car, something lacking in the C5. the seat of the pants feel seems to be better in the C4, and the interior can best be described as kinda tight and (according to the ladies), cozy. I chose the C4, but it really comes down to whether you prefer more of a rude, rough car that feels more like the late 60;s, or whether you want a rocket-propelled cadillac. i love all vettes, so im not saying anything bad about either one. :yesnod:
I've owned 3 vettes in little over a year... an 86, a 95 and a 96. I could of got a C5, but they just aren't the car for me... I like the cockpit feel and the clam shell hood too much. The LT4 runs right with any stock C5 less the Z06... so that point is null for me. The C5 is certainly newer in design and the car reflects it in it's ride, stiffness, braking, etc.
If the C5 didn't have the back end of a garage door, I most likely own one :) Not in DBGM thou... I heard the older folks that were buying that color couldn't find their cars at the country club... so GM stopped producing that color and started the run on MY so they were easier to find
:D :jester
I guess my assometer needs recalibrated because my friend took me for a ride in his new convertible and I could not tell any difference in the ride of it and my C4 with the FX3 set on the soft setting. I don't know what suspension is on the C5 but probably standard because I know that he bought one with the best price that he could find. I was impressed with the performance of the C5 it ran strong for a stock car.
not necessarily more of a racecar, it just has a racier feel...more connected, more touchy. and by the way, the C4's outhandle the C5's on autocross events all the time....they did an article in one of the vette magazines (corvette fever?) about an old 87 or 89 outhandling the new C5's, and the engineers couldnt believe it...it has to do with a narrower track and a shorter wheelbase. this might be one reason why you see so many more C4's doing auto-x.
I have driven the C-5 Fixed roof, Coupe, and Convertable. Will stick with the C-4. To each their own they are cool but they still don't feel like a sports car more like a cadillac. But I have to say they sure are fast.
i'm happy with my heavly modified C4 for the time being, i do plan on buying a c-5 z06 once the c6 hits and prices drop even further but it's more for reasons of trying something new. cars to me are like clothes, as much as i may like the shirt i have on now i probably won't be wearing it in 5yrs. same goes for cars, on the technical side i like the design of the C5 much more, it's far more simple. has less parts, less weight, it's a stiffer chassis, the rear suspension is a better design. the weight distribution isn't as good as the C4 but your line of sight driving is improved & you can use the suspension to make up for the C5's slightly heavier front bias. the LS engines are full of potential and have a vastly improved combustion chamber and valve angle compared to the D-port and LT1/4 castings. i also like the interior of the C5 much more except the seats, the early 90's sport seats are just comfy and hold you in place. i also expect C5s to break down less when they hit 100k miles, to the person who said a C5 was more complex than a C4 i'd really love to know how  both cars are quite easy to work on, the C5 just has fewer pieces. i mean has anyone noticed how many small parts are in just a C4 front bumper??? the other thing is your personal preference. i like C1's, love C2's, hate C3's & like C4's i use to love C5's but now it's more of a curious like, i'm sure it won't be long before i get to experement on one for a few years & have fun with it.
I notice some say the C4 is more of a racecar, how well did the C4's do in endurance racing, the C5R is doing great.
In SCCA Production Class endurance races, the C4 won EVERY race for three consecutive years. Then the SCCA banned the Corvette from it's races. An amazing record unlikely to be equaled or broken.

Re: C4 versus C5 (Devil Dog)
The C5R is the most successful racing Vette in the history of the breed.
When it comes to C5's vs. C4's it all about "That was then,This is now!",I also love C2's but I know they are not a better car than a C5,nor would I try to compare, just compare a C4 vert to a C5 vert and look at the fit/finish then compare the wind noise, that my friends is called evolution,EVOLVE PEOPLE or be doomed to live in the past.
Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

This is because the C4 is more forgiving to a less experience driver. The C5 takes precision driving on an autocross course. If you get on it too hard out of a turn, a C5 will loose its rear. A C4 has a softer suspension which lets it squat out of turns better. So I do agree that the C4 is a better car for autocrossing because more people can drive it because you can drive slopy...but the if both cars are driven to their potential the C5 is still quicker. Actually there are a tone of c3's that can take both on an autocross course. There is a BSP Vintage class in Sacramento that kicks azz with C3's.
If you start talking road courses there is no competition, C5 hands down.

I'll definitely agree that the C5 is far superior for roadracing, but there is no way (generally speaking) that the C4 is more forgiving. Part of the appeal of the C5 is that it doesn't take much of a driver to put up impressive numbers. :chevy
