I have an '84 as well. I would invest in a Factory Service Manual as mentioned above. I purchased a CD version on eBay. This one is searchable. It should also include the Electrical troubleshooting supplement.

pull spark plug nr 1 and find tds , set a mark on the balancer , disconekt the brown wire . set timing ....

Definitely check that the plug wires are on the right order and that your timing is set with the est wire disconnected. BTW, the one pic you posted of it, there was another brown connector right next to it facing down. That wasn't the other half?
