Default On the topic of value...

A glimpse inside the mind of a C4 owner.

In another thread or threads I have seen recently a number of responses indicating they would not sell their C4 for xxx price, based on initial purchase price and over all investment.

All these new threads of potential c4 buyers made me think of this.

i'd like to see if we can have an open adult community conversation based on everyone's input on whomever is willing to participate and throw it out there. open commentary on figures.

Before we start I think it is fair to say this is ONLY opinions and nothing should be taken personal.

What is your car worth to you VS what others think or the market thinks?

IN: I have well over 30+K? in mine.

ASK: I ask 25k, because someone might know what it normally takes to build something like this or pay to have it built would be 80+K based on other people's receipts on the net, and it is still 600 miles on the build only and not even finished for most people's taste.

TO ME: I'd probably talk about a real cash offer of $15l, but 18-20K would FEE OK to me.

Show your hand!

I will weigh in as I have asked value questions multiple times.
I have a 1989 Coupe A4 and I have around 8k into it. I would ask 8K (maybe 8500 in early summer) for it as I think the market is there for a car that is in the shape mine is in
It has 38k miles with minor issues:
  • static in the stereo
  • Could use weather stripping on the drivers and passenger outside window sweeps
  • Anti-lock light is on
  • About 3-4 visual scratches in the paint.
Real cash, 7k would probably buy it.

IN: I have a bit over 20K in mine, including purchase price

ASK: I would ask what I have in it. Low mileage, babied cars aren't that common, but I realize they are out there. Mine is just coming up on 18K miles.

I have gone through and have done the maintenance from it sitting for about 10 yrs, including all new brakes, flex lines, new bearings, hoses, DeWitts radiator, shocks, plus have a closet full of parts to finish the enhancements that aren't on the car already.

TO ME: I really would have to get out of it what I have in it to justify selling it. I am not a young guy anymore and on a fixed income, so I don't have the time to recover a loss.

REALITY: I doubt anyone would be interested in it at that price. Most of the new C4 buyers around here grab up the cheap ones and then have buyer's remorse as they find out it is really going to cost as much as I would sell mine for to fix theirs up to not leak, drive nice, etc etc blah blah

Also C5 prices are tanking around NE Ohio, down in to the low teens even. Regardless of the fact that C5's have increased maintenance costs and are starting to experience failure of parts that are made from NONOBTANIUM, the perception of low C5 prices affect even the nicest C4's.

For what it is worth, go check out autotrader and the couple other main selling sites, use 44203 as a zip code and look 200 miles out. there a numerous C4's with less than 10K miles for sale, some at asking prices that will make your jaw drop. NOTICE I said asking, not selling.

That is my hand.

What's amazing to me is that a GTA or IROC of comparable year, especially the 5.7L cars, are worth much more it seems, than a like-year C4.

I like this idea. I’ll throw mine in.
94, black on black, auto, G92, 110k miles with about 30k on the engine (rebuilt with hotcam and roller rockers). Recent work done to it includes:
Battery
Alternator
Headlight gears
Weatherstripping (all) windshield, halo, hatch,doors
Left bank O2 sensor
IAC valve
Cruise control vacuum lines replaced
Transmission fluid and filter
Replaced oil pan gasket
Pulled seats and scrubbed carpet
New center console and radio trim
New tires
Fuel pump
Radiator cap
decent stereo with gps and back up camera
currently no codes, no issues, everything works as it
should.

Its not for sale, but I’d probably take around $8000 if it was.

I have a 91 ZR1 that I paid 15,900 in October 2016. I did some work to make the car full on factory spec perfect along with some maintenance items- probably another 6-7k.

I'd probably take $20k (as it needs nothing) if someone offered today. BUT if I found another car that I could not pass up, I'd go $17,500 in a quick sale to buy the "new girlfriend."

BTW... I just sold my 89 a month ago to help pay for a 2004 Z06 Commemorative edition.

A couple of years ago a mechanic on his way home from another hangar stopped by mine with his 3rd gen TransAm that he restored when he saw my C4. He mentioned resources were hard to come by. I told him how I saw a nice 3rd gen Z28 at a cruise-in one time, but yeah, all the nice ones seem far and few between.

I guess F bodies are more likely to go down the ownership chain to the point that they're being repaired in an AutoZone parking lot with a pair of ViceGrips. So the really nice ones hold value.

I have 2 96's so ill play along X2

1996 Red Gut Grand Sport Coupe. 21700 miles

Paid $27500 with tax and other than fluid changes, gas and insurance have not had to spend anything on it. I did purchase a set of date correct GSC's for $500 to have just in case i ever want to go for Benchmark/Duntov

Worth to me.... Priceless. I was 23 when Grand Sports were new and i remember lusting after one that sat in the showroom at a local Chevrolet dealer. I knew that i would have one some day and about 5 years ago the planets aligned and i found my one owner red gut Z51 coupe.

Ask.... if i had to sell i would expect it to sell for $30-32 as it is very close to perfect.

1996 LT4 Coupe 30000 miles

I paid $13300 including tax. The car is in good condition but not a garage queen. I purchased a set of OEM GS wheels and tires and did a grand sport stripe. the car will needs some new weather stripping and all fluids changed. mirrors need to be repainted and a good buffing. all in i will probably be at about $17K i probably paid a tad to much but i specifically wanted a white LT4 so i took the lowest mile car i could find

Worth to me... what i have in it

Ask.... I think once everything is done and in order its probably worth $12-13K with the GS wheels.

IDK about well over but after all is said and done, 30K seems about right as to what I have in it. Unfortunately, there is NFW the market will support that. Also since it isn't just built, I have played with it for a bit so that would bring down the price some.

I'd definitely go $18-20K if someone asked. $15K and up would get serious consideration. I know that isn't happening so since I have too much stuck in it to sell, I got to play with the toy till it breaks. Maybe if the motor dies, I'd part it out or sell it as a project and get something newer and nicer?

In It? Probably a little over 9 in cash, including purchase price. Multiples of that if the labor was priced out at market rates. But, everything is rebuilt except the diff and suspension.

I did a thread on it once and it came in just about where I planned. (A little higher, because I upgraded some stuff.)

Ask? It's not for sale. Frankly, it's not as nice as some of your cars. The market would rape me on it. Since it's an 85, it might go for 4?

To Me: I couldn't replace it for 10, and I wouldn't take that for it now, anyway.

Last October, me and the Mrs. jumped in it and did a 4K round trip with no issues but a piece of loose electrical tape. I couldn't do that in most 85's I would buy for the money I have in mine.

This is turning out pretty interesting, so far it seems to be inline with why certain cars or c4 models are all over the map in asking price.

This will be neat to look back at in like 5 years and see where everyone is with their cars or if they sold them and how much time changes the value for us.

There are some great cars here, and if not great in other people's eyes at least they are to the owner that put a lot of time and or money in to them to keep or make them nice.

For the guys with modified cars it seems everyone has a realistic expectation or understanding going in that this is for THEM and not resale. probably the same a smoking, just consider it a loss but enjoyable for some.

ive always admired your ZRs. i didnt realize the yellow car had white guts. Very nice!

ive always thought that had the white interior been offered, the grand sports would have been stunning with that combo

She's a "sleeper" car, except for the badges. Nice mods but you'd never know by looking...well maybe the headers and exhaust. Lots of TLC, garage kept, everything maintained as needed to stay in top shape...OK, the heater core now needs attention (always something!).

She makes 431 hp at the wheels, but has a stock idle. My best 1/4 trap was 121 mph, and best 1/2 mile drag was 144.25 mph. Anything over $25k would get my interest, or maybe $15k under duress.

But, this car (bought for $21k in 07 with 35k miles, now 67k mi) and I have a lot of history together. She's been my main hobby and I've got a lot of TLC invested in her. I'm NOT in the market to sell...I mean what would I do without something to tinker with???

Naw... $25k+ should keep the tire-kickers away for now!

Have a nice fresh A body that has

over 90k sunk into it.
The parts list, options, 60k appraisal means absolutely nothing, rare doesnt mean desirable.
To see high teens/20ish would probably be realistic where someone actually buys it.
Turned down 25k and shoulda taken it; What Id be happy with wont happen.

If you get lucky, good for you but plan on losing money from the day you buy it.

At each price point as it increases opens up LOTS of options for buyers. Unless someone has to have yours and money isnt an issue selling it could be an eye opener.

Think a lot of worth is perceived, most buyers dont care what some forum thinks, some 1 of xx color, a copy and paste of history. Who fn cares.

After blowing many yrs and 90k into an old A body with almost 0 miles..... Id be lucky to see high teens or 20. That 60k appraisal, stack of receipts, pics of the goodies doesnt mean jack to anyone except they are getting a good deal at someone elses expense..or mistake however you look at it. haha

If one really frets about value dont buy it, get a 2nd job or a divorce.

Not everyone will agree but unles you really score on something, detail park & flip it youre going to lose $.
Right sucker and you can talk his Corvette Fever up, don't forget.

IDK about him but I'd go for a high mileage C6 or one with a broken transmission or better yet, engine. Replace with something much better and hear LESS "OBSOLETE" or NLA

People in the forums are more likely emotionally controlled by their heart and might be induced to pay more. Outside they might be more likely to listen to their financiers and pass on higher prices. IMO.

Not really sure about it. Say I showed you my stack of receipts, now what? That was 100k miles ago. It isn't brand new. I bought a new motor for $10k but drove it 50k miles is it still worth $10k? I think not.

I don't follow. Even if I get 3 jobs, it still costs as much. In fact it is worse since I have less time to play with what I have. Divorce is EXPENSIVE or so I am told.

My 1991 turquoise 6 speed coupe has about 85000 miles on it, some paint defects that do not stand out and everything works except the adjustable suspension. The interior is very nice, with only minor wear on the drivers seat bolster showing. It is not worn through, but is just starting to show wear. It has a supercharger with twin intercoolers and a custom true dual exhaust. I probably have about $ 11000 in it and right now would not sell it for any less. If I really wanted to sell it I would try for $ 9000. With about 375 horsepower it is quite responsive to the throttle and is fun to drive.
