Shifter Lights
Forgive me if this is a repeat question. 89 with automatic. I have the center console off and there are no shifter lights in the sockets provided. The two wires that appear to be the voltage source have no power to them with the headlights on (or off for that matter). I have checked all my fuses, but none seem to be blown. My other gauge lights seem to be working fine. I can get two socket and pigtail kits to replace the lights, but I'm curious what is missing, and why no voltage to the wires.
Thanks!
Bill

I can tell you if my memory is correct, that's the way mind was when I replaced a shifter boot. I believe the bulbs are there, but not in that bracket.
I know others will post, better look little closer for two bulbs.

There's only one bulb. They apparently decided two bulbs was too much brightness!
Those two wires with the exposed terminals don't look like original wiring to me. Could they be for some added accessory from the PO?

Found the blown fuse (labeled INST), so now I have juice to those two wires, controlled by the headlight switch. I was wondering if there was a plug housing on them originally, and if so, what it looked like. Would hate to clip them off and use aftermarket splices, if I could just get the pigtail and plug that's supposed to be on it.
Thanks!

Glad you found the blown fuse, and determined these wires are for the shifter light (singular)! Those are common terminals, and you should be able to find the correct mates at your favorite auto parts store. Be sure to use insulated mating terminals. That is undoubtedly the reason for the blown fuse. With the INST fuse blown, you had a lot of other things that didn't work!

Only one bulb for the shifter light as mentioned, Here's a snapshot of what might likely be found under the early console. If the wires you found are powered by light illumination circuit they likely went to the original socket. They don't look like typical PO add on. Wires appear to be gray and black > that's what I'd expect for indicator lighting.

A 'local' auto parts store should be able to change maybe GM # 12167138 socket or most resellers have a socket to fit. A Wells #689 might fit. They aren't cheap any longer. C4 & C5 are the same - maybe time to do a little salvage hunting. eBay looks least expensive maybe. I've never tried the 12167138 personally but I'd think likely.
