I'm gearing up to start releasing parts information, software files and instructions on my BOSE Head Unit Replacement Project for 1984 to 1989 C4's.
I'd be very happy to hear what you think of this project.

I have a 90, but I like the look for your earlier C4's!

Looks great! I think if you get this going for the C4, you could easily make a version for the C5 as it is also 1.5 Din. Would work great for those that don't want to do a double din conversion.

The C5 is 1.5 DIN??? That's a surprise! I thought the 1.5 DIN format went the way of the dinosaur.

This is very cool. I'd be interested in simply buying a fully assembled unit ready for installation. Any plans to sell complete?

I used a Raspberry Pi for other things, makes sense to use it for such a project. Where did the picture come from you used? Have you already created a working system?

I don't have any plans to provide complete systems or kits. But I am considering selling some items like the acrylic chassis components. The other stuff is available on-line and I can't compete on price with those retailers.

Yes, I have a working system. The picture is of my car. It's still a work in progress and probably always will be.

I'd be interested in something along these lines, but with many fewer features. FM stereo, bluetooth connectivity so I can stream from an android phone, and an appearance similar to what you've crafted. What you're doing is awesome, but I just wouldn't use the extras in my use of the car.

Anything along these lines available or in the pipeline?

Well, there is an open source project called "Crankshaft" that implements "Android Auto" on a Raspberry Pi. It looks promising:

Crankshaft might give you a lot of what you are looking for. My in-dash chassis in combination with Crankshaft would probably be nice package for you. I haven't explored Crankshaft myself since I've been developing my own software, but I may have to check it out as an option.

The there is a GPS/NAV package available for the Raspberry Pi and the Raspberry Pi does support USB cameras. So these options are available. I haven't yet found a license-plate mounted backup camera that has a USB interface. But if/when I find one I want to try it.

This is an amazing project. I've spent a whole lot of time getting my original Bose to work correctly, but have also been following your work over the past year. If I were to replace, this would definitely be my direction.

I love that you will be releasing the critical files for folks. It lets them build what they want.

If it were me, I would be building one with the 1.5DIN area being as much screen as possible and putting the volume control on the console and the USB outlet in the center console storage area. Your approach give everyone that flexibility.

I'll have to also look at Crankshaft. Hadn't heard of that one yet.

I've never seen any either and a quick look at the usual places, not much out there except for DVR cameras. All the ones I could find are meant to mount on the windshield, but I suppose they could be adapted with some kind of mount. I think this is because all the head units with android or proprietary OS have RCA inputs for the rear camera so no one saw the need to make a USB one.

Android guys that did a tablet install use something like this for to interface to a backup camera

Amazon Amazon

EDIT.. here is a code snippet I found for it too

Very interesting. If a USB video capture dongle can make a standard composite video camera work with a Raspberry Pi then that opens the door to a number of possibilities. There are a lot of standard composite video, license plate mounted, video cameras available. So it looks like incorporating a backup camera into a Raspberry Pi system may be feasible.

Would it be possible to make the volume control as an on-screen slider, thereby eliminating the ****?
