Default Large vs small input shaft seat track transmission

I'm confused about the large vs small input shafts on the seat track transmission. Specifically when each was used and why Chevrolet produced two versions of the transmission. Was there any difference in durability? I'm getting ready to replace the seat track on my passenger side on my 1991 Corvette.

On my 92 it is a 1/4" shaft:
Don't know when or why they changed it.

That must be the small shaft. I think the large shaft was around .31. Thanks for the picture.
