Some might think you can get away with pulling the KS and draining the radiator but if it is that bad, I don't know how your structure is but mine has the overflow tank which I would remove and hose it down till it is clean. Flush the hoses with a garden hose. Flush the coolant tank and the radiator especially from the bottom, if I can. Backflush the heater core and the KS holes. After all is said and done, fill with water and add some sort of radiator flush. See link below. Run for a while and then drain. Repeat and see if it comes out clean.

Pull both KS's.

Pull the heater core hose from the water pump.

Fix a garden hose to the header core hose, run. This will backflush the heater core, intake, heads and block. Flush until water runs clear.

Flush the rad the same way until water runs clear.

Close system, fill, run it. Easy.

In addition to the above suggestions, determine if you have 1 or 2 knock sensors located in the bottom of the block. They must be removed
as they are located in the 'sump' of the block. It will take great effort to dislodge the debris in the sump, either by water pressure directed into the
sensor holes, or with a wire. It is a messy job, but needs to be done.

Replace the sensors, inexpensive, and torque them to 14 ft# (important)

I think 89 has a KS but the other side has a nipple with a hose to the oil cooler that has to be removed to back flush

Already covered.

Yeah, if it's an early car, pull the 1 KS and the other pipe plug. Kind of self evident.

I just installed a coolant filter in my 89 after battling the suspended rust particles. I posted info and pix on the "what did you do to your C4 today" Got all the stuff on Amazon for around $100. NO MORE RUST!

Installed and tucked away. No clearance issues

Another shot after completion

Removed stock WSW reservoir and installed mini unit to make room for coolant housing and filter. Tapped into heater core feed.

tapped into the HC feed. Used two 90 degree fittings. Mounted the filter housing to the bracket on the blower motor housing.
