Honestly, I think you're losing your car here. That car at 13k ia a steal. If I was you I'd be begging that guy to take my 13k. You're not going to touch a nice zr1 for that money, and (this is gonna push the zr1 crowd off) it wont drove as well. The zr1 while it has more power and a uniquedrivetrain, it weighs more and feels more cruiser than sports coupe. The zr1 isnt necessarily an "upgrade" it's a different kind of car.

I tend to agree with most of what you post.... but I cannot on this one. I figure it like this... if I had never driven either a ZR-1 or an LT-1 or 4 for that matter, I'm pretty sure you would notice a big difference in a ZR-1 and probably consider it an upgrade over the others. Yes, the Z can be a nice cruiser, but there is no doubt that the Z is a sports car through and through. I know theres a good handful of ZR-1ers that auto cross their cars and I think theyre pretty sufficient for that task as well as 1/4 mile and top speed runs.
Op, 13k can get you a ZR-1 with a little higher mileage, Ive seen them sell for that. Very nice ones will sell for 15-18k with still pretty low mileage like 30-50k. Having owned a few C4's 2 that were ZR-'s....I can never at least suggest someone looking for their next C4, not at least test drive and consider a ZR-1....

I know if I was ever to buy another c4 it would be a zr1. A ;90 if possible.
IIRC the zr1 was 200lbs heavier than a base, but basically 150hp more. I don't remember, if you could get a handling pacakge in a z though. I thought not.
I can and have modified the **** out of any c4, A highly modified, but yet reasonably modified Z would be something I'd like to try.
I'd trade my car for a proper modified Z in most cases.
Maybe a coyote motor in my c4 would the same.

What would be a sensible price for a 92 white 6 speed coupe - good driving condition 95000 miles, drivers seat bolster rough, new tires - recent optispark - trying to decide whether to keep it through retirement - getting tougher to get in and out of lol

IMO a big part of the Z51 suspension on 1993+ is the matched set of wheels and tires. I have had FE1 suspension cars and pre 1993 cars with the matched wheels and tires. The pre 1993 cars certainly rode softer like the 1993+ FE1 cars but the turning feel was a heck of a lot better with the same wheels on all 4 corners vs. the narrower set on fronts of the 1993+. The matched set gives it more of a sports car feel where the narrower fronts make it drive more caddilac like.
I'd take a 1993+ FE1 with a matched set first (if you can't get Z51) then decide if you want to go suspension mods... reason I say that is if I was doing Auto X I'd want a couple things before suspension (new rear end number 1, followed likely by some brake upgrades, clutch and flywheel, etc.), and when I did suspension I'd go coilover and call it a day vs the standard Z51 setup. I had a 1996 LT4 CE with Z51 so I speak from experience. I wouldn't pay a dime more for F45 because that will likely get tossed unless you auto X on bumpy pavement.

IMHO from experience my 1992 FX3 with base springs, re-valved shocks, and big sway bars (I think ZR1) handled and drove the best. I would not hesitate to purchase a base LTx with 6 speed.
Good luck on your search!

I'm on oak cliff, kessler park area. If you're ever around, I'd be happy riding passenger seat in the car.

I would not hesitate on any LT1/LT4 ZF6.
The differences are not that much. On the base suspension I have put the Z51 Bilsteins and bigger sway bars to get a very good handling car. I did like the quicker steering ratio of my Z51 car, but to me that was not enough difference to make or break the deal.
I don't use the smaller staggered front tires, but a wheel/tire swap is easy and common. Especially if you put on some nice Fikse wheels. I like the handling with the bigger fronts to make a square setup instead of staggered.
I like the LT4 better. To me it seems like more than 30 hp difference, but I am not sure if my LT4 is stock or not. My '95 LT1 ZF6 is stock. The LT1 can also be improved with a cam or heads or headers, etc if you want. My LT4 runs every bit as quick as my C5.
So many choices, but to me finding a clean good condition car is the most important part. Once you have a good one, you can do a few minor things to meet you needs (or go wild if you want to).
Good luck.

The Z does weigh more and I'm sure the LT4 hits at low rpm like the Z does but once the Z gets to 5K rpm, you get an extra shove in the seat that keeps happening for way longer than it feels like it should. And it makes this mechanical noise once the rpms get up there that I honestly thought I'd only ever get to hear from video footage that is just wonderful.

I picked up my 91 Z for $13,000. 81k for mileage on it, no cracks to any of the interior dash components, two tops, Corsa exhaust, 94-95 silver A molds. Paint is in great shape. The only issues I had were a stalling issue which ended up being a new hard line for the MAP sensor and the horns did not work. After a beer and some very fine sand paper, I had the brass contacts cleaned under the buttons and the horns work again. So for a little wrench turning, it's a fantastic find for $13,000 but may not be the norm for Z prices. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some out there cheaper with lower mileage. They are out there but he would just have to be patient. I stalked this one for over a year as it changed hands from 3rd to 4th owner, and then to me.

Once you go Z,,,, ya never go back!! I had a few C4's, then a ZR-1, then a couple of Z06's.... then a couple more regular C4's...... I went 2 years Vetteless.... Could have easily bought a C5 or another Z06 for that matter.... I chose another ZR-1.... Hard to explain... the damn LT-5 is like a drug..... you just never get enough....

Personally I’d search for a car that has the right color, mileage, condition, and transmission. The rest can be taken care of and gives the ability to put your own touch. Happy hunting!
