Default Repairing my door panel - vinyl curling

Earlier I had posted about needing help on my door skin (oops, should have been door panel) for my 88 Anniversary Edition project. Great tips, I wanted to share the results.

It ended up being pretty simple. I started with a heat gun on low heat to relax the worst area that was curled over. My goal was to just keep it from wanting to pull away when I glued down the panel.

Made a big workbench with a scrap sheet of plywood. Definitely came in handy. Next, used some green painters tape and newspaper to really mask the area thoroughly.

my adhesive a choice was 3M 90 High Strength Adhesive. It worked very well on a convertible top install I did a few years back. Followed up with a lot of clamps to hold the top vinyl lip down to the plastic door panel. Thought I had a pic of this process to show off but must have spaced it out.

let the adhesive sit for a day and unwrapped it today. Pleased with the results, now I need to spend some time really cleaning the panel. That white cover shows everythibg!

thanks for the tip. I had the same issues with my 85 - tried various methods - some (sorta) worked, some not. I'm planning on some door panel rework soon, and will give your method a try.

I'm keeping my eye on the top seam. Noticed a couple of areas that seemed to be pulling away after only a couple hours. Not what I was expecting, will keep the group posted.

Was an older can of 3M 90...

How's the black door carpet on that 35th?

I've had to glue down the edges of mine in places.

The carpet had been glued down previously, and not well. It is adhering fine but there was your excess coming up from the carpet onto the white vinyl. That's my next step to cleaning these up. Maybe some 3M adhesive remover or mineral spirits to break up the excess?

Depending on what "glue" was used it could be difficult to remove excess. Best to test solvents on an out of sight area.

Here is a pic of my second attempt, same process as the first but with a fresher can of 3M 90. Will be removing clamps today for an inspection.

I have had good success using Shoo Goo to re-attach the vinyl when it pulls away due to age. It's a bit thick, but after 24 hours it seems to hold really well and fills in areas that have deteriorated.

Default excellent work.

i restored my bbq paint cracked and peeling medium grey 86 panels to look new.

i applied many carpet pieces with the spray 90. its the only way to go for large panels.

on my vinyl to plastic and where i used aluminum flasjing as a thin reinforcement to the various cracked plastic components i bonded with DAP Weldwood contact cement.

Great job on your second attempt. i used a piece of wood snd half the clamps.

Thanks! I followed your post extensively and used it as my plan to rebuild the door panel. I had many of the same issues: broken lock housing tabs, cracked plastic, etc. My next phase is to create some new studs to screw down the top trim piece, following your method.

To those that are looking for an excellent walk thru of aa door panel rebuild, VikingTrad3r post is here.
