1985 heater not working
Took the vette out in 39 degree weather yesterday. Turned on the heater, cold air blowing out, windows became foggy. Heater was working in the past. Controls hard to slid.
Later, heater worked. Confused

Make sure coolant is full

Does the valve on your hot water hose to your heater core change positions when you move the temp lever away from the OFF position? As you may know, that valve is in your engine compartment, at the front of your a/c evap. enclosure. There should be enough stored vacuum to actuate this valve with the temp lever several times, even after you shut off the engine.

Heater cores don't have a "going out" state which is where he may be confused. They either flow coolant (the valve) or they don't. If they flow then they either leak or they don't.
OP -
If it was hard to slide that sounds more like your flap that directs air from the evaporator core (AC) to the heater core. The rest of them are controlled by vacuum (air deflectors that direct air to the dash, feet, windshield, etc).
Things to check:
- Are you getting flow off coolant to the heater core? If not, the valve is bad as described above. It is vacuum controlled so would not be your "hard to slide" problem
- Is your heater core leaking? You would smell this and you would be able to feel moister in the passenger foot well if bad enough. An early on leak you would just smell. This is less likely though as if this was the case you would still get heat, at least until you ran low enough on coolant
- What is your coolant level? Make sure it's correct.
Me personally, I think it has to do with a sticking flap for the airflow since you said it started to work later.
