1990 coupe - 37K miles - (needing tires and AC repair) - $9500. paid about the same 3 or 4 years earlier. I installed a new exhaust system, brakes, serviced everything, and fixed a china wall oil leak during the years ownership, so I figure that was my depreciation costs during ownership.

1996 coupe w/ 28K miles - purchase for $12.5K - sold about 2-3 years later for $13.5K - added a new corsa exhaust, and general maintenance, so I figure I broke about even.

(almost feel guilty about this) - 1990 coupe - paid $9200 - sold about 3 years later for $11000 (with 38K miles and one very tired engine). installed new corsa/magnaflow exhaust, new brakes, general maintenance stuff. figured I broke about even - car had some serious performance and braking issues. that owner sold the car one year later for the same money.

I would love to know how you made money or near broke-even on most of these cars. Did they need repair or did you make some big improvements?

None really needed allot of work... I did spend money on them,, and some I had to have shipped... so I didnt make a ton of money...That said, I wont take a low offer, I dont care how long it takes... Im not desperate to sell any of my cars really. My goal is always to try to recoup what I spent when I sell a car. Have to understand, I never buy a POS to begin with and paint and interior condition are always a number 1 priority when I purchase any car really....The one thing I can tell you is cleanliness, under carriage, suspension and engine bay detailing is usually what sets my cars apart from others.

x2.....buy the right car for the right price to begin with you usually wont get hurt too bad. Sometimes you may even see a little profit.

Never gave much thought to it, figured if money was that tight its time to get a 2nd job or another hobby.

Bought right is half sold!

I sold a '95 Base Polo with 138K miles last year for $8,500. Good condition for a DD.

Paid $6,700 a year earlier. Only work I did was Optispark, A-pillar weatherstrip, and new Nitto tires.

Swapped the better condition wheels and tires to my '96 before it sold.

Last year, bought a 96 lt1 for $4500.
new rear tires, swapped to 3.07 gears, new icm, coil, and opti.
paint is good from far, but far from good.
currently for sale $5500

Few days ago, bought an 89 m6 for $5400.
needs some attention here and there.
Paint is better than the 96.
Currently not for sale.

Bought one cheap in 01; put a bunch of money into modifying it and having a ton of fun over 17 years and sold it cheaper in 18.

Pretty much how the C4 market is.......buy cheap, sell cheaper.
