I have a pioneer double din with gps in my 85,note the fascia needs to be modified.
That is the hardest part, need to cut sections and fit the double din surround and use filler to make it fit and look good.
Of course going from bose to aftermarket, needs the bose amps in doors and rear to be bypassed.
I had a kenwood stereo in there before so that was done already.
It looks great well worth the effort, cant supply pictures due to photo bucket issues.
Thank you Gerardvg, did you have to do any modifications structurally behind the dash to make room for the double din? Too bad about the pocket issues I sure would like to see it.
While not directly relevant, I recently installed a "digital only" Kenwood head unit in my 88. Without the CD player, the HU was very narrow in depth and required zero modifications to fit in the dash or center console, other than the 1.5 DIN kit from Crutchfield. If you are using an Android or so in at HU without a CD player, I would think it should fit with only the bezel changes mentioned earlier.
Matt is your head unit a double din? I just don’t like the look of a single din in the dash, the dash kits used to reduce the size of the hole in the dash while look better than they used to to me still looks too much like an add on.
I own a 85 vette and was going to install a Kenwood DDX-393 (dual din unit) last weekend. On my car there is a chunk of plastic inside about three to four inches from the front of the dash. That chunk of plastic probably offer marginal support to the dash itself and there should be no reason why I couldn't cut that chunk of plastic out, but I couldn't bring myself to doing that and just put back in my Kenwood single din unit.
You definitely need to adjust the front fascia cover to get a dual din to fit. Let us know how you make out with your install.
You will have to trim the plastic bracket behind the dash so that the double din headunit fits inside. It is a tight space with all of the wiring harnesses that run behind it. As I recall I also made up metal brackets for each side to secure it in place.
As for the bezel, You have two options. You can buy a double din bezel or trim and fill yours. You trim a little from the top and bottom and then you have to fill in the sides.
Dt86 that looks great! Is there a place that sells double dins for the early C4s? What did you use to fill in the sides.
Thanks! Not gonna lie, it wasn't a "fun" project. But well worth it afterwards. To fill in the sides I used polyester filler. It's somewhat flexible which is good for this application. There was a seller on here that sold double din bezels, double d mods I think the name was. Not sure if they're still around or not.

Here is a pick of my install. It is a single DIN. I used the flat mounting out of the housing kit so the headunit would end up flush with the console trim. The kit included a fitting that brought it out a 1/4" or so that brought the housing flush to the console, but the HU stuck out further fron there. I thought this setup ended up working better. I was on a budget, so this worked well. I did an Android double DIN in a Tundra that turned out really nice, but there was a kit just for that dash to make it look right.

I think the skills you need are the creation of the chassis and the assembly of the parts. The code is already done and released on his site.
