Default windshield tray drain udders - anyone cut theres so they are open?

the drain udders on my 86 were plugged. they have a closed end on them that looks almost like its intended to capture solids but let water pass through.

until they fill with solids.

so has anyone nipped off the end of the udder to make it an "open passage"?

any strange unintended consequence from this?

I just clean mine out from time to time. I guess you could cut the ends off.

never had a problem with the rubber udder, but I did have an issue with the LH hood latch cavity filling with water. slight mod solved that problem.

added a 3/8" hole w/ flange fitting, a drain hose, and relocated fan relay -

i'm reading the julian date on the relay as june 12th (85). the earliest dates I've found on the car are some May dates -

definitely doing joe c's demonstrated mod. thanks!!

now what about this? Is there supposed to be some sort of adhesive underneath these pads on this 86?

well, not sure of an 86, but my 85's are stuck down with something - never had a reason to remove them. in your case, i'd dry it out, clean and prep a coat of paint, and install the pad with a coating of black RTV.

at some point during the C4's production run, they did away with the pads altogether. as I recall, my 96 didn't have anything.

here's a shot of my drain hose as it exits down below the floor pan...

given the way this adhesive is layered on top of this circular fitting of some type, I'd say this is factory adhesive.

Thanks for the detailed pics joe.

in retrospect, for anybody else who sees this, removing the small pads are not worth it if you own a pressure washer.

im going to have to find a decent adhesive for this now.

pressure washing under the pad would work fine, the pressure washer will not blow the adhesive glue apart--no chance--but the pressure washer may harm the foam pad. id probably rig ip some thin flexible protective cover for the pad and try to get the washer right in there to blow the crud out from under the pad. i had about an ounce of dirt under each.

then--if your pads are covered in overspray like mine were--slip paper under the pad and give the dry pad a dusting of sem landau black. i did the same color correction/cleanip with the oddly shaped foam "gaskets" that come down from the hinge area.

for all you guys with low mileage cars that live inside, you are lucky!!
