"Warranty void if removed"
My '96 LT4 has, on the rearmost driver's side freeze plug, a thermal disc that says "warranty void if removed". These discs are designed to melt if you overheat the engine. I have seen these many times on rebuilt/re-manufactured engines but never on a factory install.
Does anyone know if they all have these, or is this an indication that my engine has been rebuilt/replaced?
Thanks!
Phil

I'd certainly think rebuilt/used OR something 'other than' GM/OE>
You could always check the block for the VIN derivative that's on the left rear. VIN derivative (if it's there) could explain much.

Id agree with the rebuilt statement...but you never know. These cars are old thier history is almost impossible to tell anymore

Thanks for the replies. I didn't get any real history on the car as I bought it off a used car lot. It easily could have been replaced at some point. I have the trans out to replace the clutch and the driveshaft has a 2002 build date decal on it, so it was replaced at some point. Will see if I can figure out the VIN derivative thing. I can't see the numbers on the passengers side front pad on the block where I'm used to looking for SBC numbers.
It appears to be a real LT4, at least it has LT4 heads, roller rockers, intake etc.
Again, thanks for the replies!

You guys live on the edge!
So..........the VIN cross reference has had the original numbers over-stamped with X's, making the original number illegible but safe to assume no match.....
The number on the front pad, under the ICM is V1208ZXD.
Is there a source to decode that? I searched the forum but didn't get a hit......
I would just like to know what the shortblock is at this point, hopefully a Corvette one. It's got all the other visible LT4 parts.
Thanks!

The engine is spotlessly clean inside and all the fasteners appear new and of the original GM type so I hope that indicates it was a GM exchange or rebuilt engine but I suppose there's no way to be sure.
It runs well and doesn't use oil or make any weird sounds so a bit disappointed that it doesn't match the car but at least it's a Corvette block.
Thanks!

GM does not used overheat tabs. Vehicle history may give you a hint where to look. Remans normally have ID markings somewhere on them; so of there is a claim they know it's their engine.
