3.07's -vs- 3.33's
The D44 I purchased has the 3.07 gears in it. I bought it on purpose. I didn't want to go to the 3.45's or stiffer. The car currently has a D36 with the 3.07 ratio performance option and I am pretty happy with 3.07's.
The question I just have to ask, does anyone have a 3.33 set behind a 4L60(or e) or a 700R4 ? What are your impressions.
From calculations, there is a difference over 8% (well 8 and a few more decimal positions, I could go back and recalculate if necessary). Which isn't much.
If you have a set, what RPM's are you tuning and what did it do to your mileage ? We go on long expressway trips, so mileage is important to me.
Thanks.

These are accurate.

You can't feel the difference between a 3.33 and 3.45 on your butt, if you can it is the difference of a little more power.

Thank you for posting that. I am going to see if I can't somehow snag the source down to my computer. I have grabbed similar stuff in the past, we will have to see how that one is built.
It probably wouldn't even be worth thinking about unless someone had a used but good condition set laying around (ie: 3.33's) that they were willing to sell for not much money due to their upgrading to a stiffer gear set in their M6 cars.
However, a lot of people with Corvette parts, think that not much money is a stack of cash, even though they will sit there for the next 35 years until their heirs throw them in the recycle bin because they have no idea what they are for.
There just aren't that many people wanting to buy a used set of 3.33's and go through the effort of reshimming them in, they will just go straight to a 3.45 or even a 3.33 Dana conversion.
For me, it is just an after thought and basically a what if.

I have auto / 3.45. Overall it is perfect FOR ME, but my my motor wants 3.73+. I'm lugging at 55-60mph in OD. I stay in D unless going 60+ for a while. Different motor though. I still get good mph and of course the 700r with 3.45 in 1st is good but not too much.
I think they used to say a 3.07 with the 1st in 700r was similar to 4.56 in an old muscle car. You can imagine going lower is going to TQ you.
I've driven or ridden in almost every gear ratio in c4.. 3.07 is a must and any thing lower is better to ME. 3.07 is great for gas and able to be sporty.

I have a 95 with a D36 and went from a 2.59 to 3.54...…………..Wow what a difference! the LT1 likes this ratio
I can cruise the interstate at 70 mph at 2250 rpm's in OD

I put the 3.54 in my 96 A4. It's not as stiff as I was fearing. I can actually see a 3.73 if a guy wasn't looking to do a bunch of highway. i agree though. The 3.54 is a nice compromise between quick and highway.

Even the TPI likes a 3.42 with a 700R4.
Don't fear the gear. It is not even worth the effort here to swap from 3.07 to 3.33. Really, even swapping in the 3.07 is just doing a lot of work and leaving a lot of improvement on the table.
When in Doubt, between two ratios, pick the lower. Fuel economy for cruising is barely different. While you say 8% isn't much... lol... that is 8% torque multiplication of 350ft-lbs. 8% is like adding another 30ft-lbs of push to your car in exchange for mph you never use. Going to a 3.54 would be a 15% step up from your 3.07. 15%!!!!! on 350lb-ft that is an additionl 50lb-ft of toque at you rear wheels. I understand not wanting to go into the 4's, but I had a 2006 Mustang GT with a 4.11 outback w/5-speed and would still get 25mpg turning 2500RPM at 75mph. I did have to change from Flowmasters to Borlas due to drone at 2500 RPM, but I wouldn't have been happier with the added performance.
I have never met a person who complained about going too low, but have talked to many who did a gear swap and were left wishing they had went the next step lower.
