Default Clear top re-do

Has anyone sanded the scratches out of their clear targa top and then just sprayed a 2k clear coat on for protection?

I redid the clear top on my c5. Mine was not scratches it was the hard coat that had crazed and the sun damage was the problem. I wet sanded the hard coat off and then applied adhesion promoter first, then two coats of 2k clear. It took several hours of sanding The final result was well worth it to me. It has been four years and still looks great today.

I think you would be fine with your repair as you stated.

On my 96 I have the "Bronze Roof Panel" (RPO code 64S). It looks like attached pic (a little hard to see, but it's there). Is this what yours looked like before you started?

I had scratches in my clear top. To get them out I had to sand through the hard coating. I just sanded all the hard coating off, buffed the top, and waxed it. That was a few years ago and it still looks fine with no clear coat on it.

Yep, I did mine a couple months back. It took 90 minutes and came out great.

1) Tape off your roof while leaving it on the car. You don't want to buff (later) any part of your paint
2) Wet sand with 1500 twice. Wipe when finished
3) Wet sand with 1000 twice and wipe when finished.
4) Buff (get a machine) with a super fine glaze cutting compound. I did mine twice then wipe.
5) I had waxed, using a liquid wax. Again, twice.

It came out super nice. I'm totally happy.

Yes, that what my top looked like and covered the entire top. The car came from Florida and the sun took its toll on the top.

.
You have number 2 and 3 in the incorrect order. Sand with 1000. Only once is necessary if you do a thorough job. Then sand with 1500. I would recommend getting a good orbital buffer/sander to do both the sanding and buffing. I use Griot's Garage buffers. They work well and come with a lifetime warranty. I have actually had mine replaced by Griot's free for a minor problem. This was after doing about 10 cars and 6 unlimited hydroplanes, which are much larger than cars. Here is the Wahoo after I did it. It was sanded with 1000, 1500, and 3000 and then buffed with 3 different grades of buffing compound. In the second photo those are water drops visible.

Check out this thread - I used Bar Keeper's Friend and a buffer on my clear top and you can see the results for yourself:
