Default heavy Vibrations when i drive over 50mph.

Hello,

i drive an Corvette c4 lt1 and i have the following problem. When i drive over 50mph the car begins to vibrate heavily at the rear axle. I checked the rims, they aren't original but they don't have so many play in it. Can it be the cardan joint? Or is that a common problem?

Im thankful for any help.

How are the tires on the car? Have you checked the balance? Does the steering wheel vibrate too?

Agreed, start simple. Alignment, wheel balance, wheels with bends. From there you can start looking into suspension, bushings, wheel bearings, etc.

Unless your rear tires are very wide, you can swap the rear tires to the front. If the vibration moves to the front, it is a tire and or rim issue. If the vibration stays in the rear, it is a mechanical issue.

Don't forget to check the wheel offset for fit and depending on the year/wheel offset option/fitment you don't want to leave it like this. The exercise is only to check it out without spending any money at first.

Any driveline noise on the garage shift? Corvettes have a ton of ujoints.

The Mrs Silverado came home on a wrecker last night and is outside right now with the extension housing broken in half because a ujoint cap clip failed and it pitched the cap at interstate speed. The resultant vibration broke the transfer case loose from the transmission in the time it took her to pull it over to the side.

OMZ.. It's a really scary failure and if you hear noise on the garage shift, check your universals..

I had a similar issue, but probably not as bad as yours. Turned out to be the tires. After a quick balance, the problem was mostly gone. The remainder is just due to old tires that gained a low spot or two during storage.
