A BMW owner once told me BMW’s are ‘drivers cars’ . What does that mean?

I used to have an 04 330i zhp coupe 6spd (poor man’s m3).
compared to the vette i felt it more planted (more confidence) romping on the pothole/patched roads of northeast ohio. Now a smooth racetrack, and yeah give me my c4.
It had better brakes but was boring as heck. No snap of any sort when giving it gas (drive by wire - lackluster in response).
also easy to money-shift (ie. Going for 3rd and you get 1st again by mistake).
oh yeah , and gawd i hated the sorry cheap-a$$ electronic braking differential which was a cheap a$$ substitute for a real limited slip posi-traction differential (technology available since the 50/60s)

lol I think some of them are "drivers cars" but others are just grocery getters and soccer mom vehicles.
The M's drive great and it's an easy car to drive briskly and not feel like you're going to lose it. However, I don't find them to be better than others, just different. They have a feel all their own.

I don't know that there is a definition of a "sports car" or "driver's car" that is quantitative. If I have a 500 HP Corvette, is that a sports car? IF it is, what if I took that motor and transplanted it into a Yugo body? Does that make it a sports car too? Is it how much power you make? Is it dependent on power/unit weight? Is it how much it does on a skidpad? Or is it just dependent on what people have associated it with?

To give a real answer, a drivers car usually refers to a car that is built to serve everyday purposes but doesn’t compromise on providing a rewarding driving experience. The old E46 bmw was a perfect example of this. If all you wanted was 4 doors and a trunk, you could take your pick of whatever boring sedan you wanted. But if you actually cared about driving a car with great handling dynamics that would put a smile on your face while taking the kids to school...you got the BMW. I’d argue that this doesn’t hold true so much anymore as the last several generations of BMWs have gotten heavier and more refined they’ve lost a lot of that edge that always set them apart.

No, it's a forum for people who feel inferior to other brands since they bought a Corvette. They are always trying to figure away to elevate their car to Porsche/Ferrari standards. Especially in the C8 forum. Seriously, go search the term Porsche in the C8 section. It blows my mind how insecure these tools are.

Different people have different ideas of what "rewarding" means. I have known people that prefer the bike because it is more rewarding to them to be on a motorcycle. Any "cage" you give them is still a cage. Some like cruisers, some like trikes, some like crotch rockets. I don't think there is a definition of what that means in quantitative terms which is why people like to sling words and phrases like that around. To paraphrase Bill Clinton, "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'rewarding' is......."

I agree that a "driver's car" term is going to get a lot of different takes.
Oh well, drivers to me are people who do the driving and have a direct connection to the machine. Automatics don't do it for me in that regard. For various reasons.
