Default 1989 speaker amps

The Right Front speaker in my 89 ragtop gives nothing but static. I have removed the amp and have it in the shop for assessment. If it is beyond repair I am contemplating swapping out one of the amps from the rear speakers. The 2 rear speakers seem to be at a lower volume than the front am am wondering if they are compatible as as replacement for front speakers before I go to the trouble of removing one.

If needed I would rather recommend buying a front amp from say e-bay.

In my '89 a **** on the face plate unit is used to adjust the balance between front/rear relative volume.

Front and rear amps are different. If you can't repair (its usually the electrolytic capacitors), you should try to source the correct part.

NavAir is correct...the amps also include equalization for their location in the cabin. They can be rebuilt in most cases. Dr. Dons is one source. https://www.doctordons.com/

There are sources for Cadillac versions and other car models that used them but I understand the issue is the same on the equalization. And I think they all will fail at some point if you buy used.

One of the guys I work with is an electronics geek. He repaired all 4 amps in my 89 by changing a couple of resistors. I had the back ones done first since they were the easiest to get out of the car. I think my total cost for all 4 was around $40 which included his time and the resistors. The hardest part was getting the ones out of the doors and then back in.

You were very lucky. The audio shop I went to charged $130.00 to repair one amp and i thought that was reasonable.
