Default Opening front hood-weight

1985- the hatch has struts to assist in opening. Are there any springs, counter weights, etc to help with the hood or is that just dead weight? I'm not as young as i used to be

When you replace them you may have to unbolt the hood support arm to get enough travel to
take the pressure off to remove and install the new ones. If you need to remove the hood support brace what you can do is take some rope and wrap it around both hood springs and then tie off to a rafter or what ever you can above to allow the extra movement and support the hood.

One person can change them but two people is a little easier. Besides the second person can hold your beer while you are working.

Good luck and let us know how you like the struts you got from Amazon.

Almost ditto. No difference all the way up and down vs the originals. I did end up putting back on the originals because of it. Not a difficult task if you're organized.

I changed out my gas springs and there was an immediate difference in the way the hood came down. It takes no effort to hold the hood up upright but you still have to hold on to it when closing where I usually drop the hood from 10" to close it.

I highly recommend swapping out your locking support to the newer style gas spring. I did mine years ago on my 85 and would not go back to the original support. I takes no effort at all to lift my hood. I still have the small ones up front. The retrofit requires moving the support to the left side to work. If I remember correctly it was a kit and included the end brackets. You may need to get the later end brackets from an 88-96 now to make it all work. Definitely worth the trouble.
