Default I'm getting really sick and tired of the.....

Gas gauge on my '92. Sometimes it will read between a quarter and a half when I start her in the morning. And by the time she warms up and I get 30 feet down the road it's into reserve with one bar to go. So I stop to get gas and she fills up on less than $20, telling me the first reading was probably right.

:mad
What is up with this? Does anyone else experience this too? Is this the sign of a bad sending unit, or just the way it is?

the last half goes alot faster than the first. mine is the same way. 3/4 of the mileage is put on the top half of the gauge.

This really bugs me too. Especially with a digital readout on the gas gauge, why on Earth couldn't GM put something in the dash to map the output of the fuel level sender to the actual capacity available?

:iagree:
Takes forever to get gauge to move from full after I fill-up, after it's moving watch out, it appears to move incremently.

It seems to get worse as the car gets older.

my 92 will say it has a 1/4 and then in like 20 secs it says reserve or no fuel at all. I have run out twice and that is not the best thing for the fuel pump.
Plus all the crap sits on the bottom of the tank.

Best to keep it at 1/2 tank if possible.

Once this fall, in cold weather, just after I brought it up to 1/2 tank it read a copla bars on startup. But it shortly read the expected half tank; has not repeated the problem.

For it to drop from 1/2 tank to 2bars sounds like a problem with the sender or the contacts. You might pull the pump and clean the three contacts just under the mounting flange.

Mine too, first half I get 200 miles and the second half only 100+. :nonod: Forget about the reserve light, almost ran out of gas on the interstate one night. :mad

Sounds like you have a bad sending unit. Replace it and your problem will go away. :yesnod:

My 92 does the same thing. And its very slow to show a full tank when it was close to empty. Once I filled it up and the gauge showed empty. I waited and it would not change so I went in and told the attendants that there was something wrong with the pump. They said they were having trouble with the pumps and gave me my money back ! So I then tried again and couldn't get it to take another ounce. After another couple of minutes it read full....finally

I never understood the concept either...

My Vette does this too...

My daily driver used to, but I had to pull the tank one day and bent the sender arm a little (on purpose) to try to correct the reading... It worked out pretty good and the gauge is now very accurate compared to what is in the tank...

One good thing, my daily driver Caddy (94) has a neat little trip computer feature that my Vette (96) doesn't... It actually displays "Gallons Used" on teh display... It's a measurement of what the computer calculates rather than the sender position/info... It's accurate to 0.5 gallons at fill-up when I'm usually at 4 gallons... Wish the Vette had this...

In the meantime, I use the average MPG info in the Vette to determine how much gas is left... I've found the Avg MPG reading to be pretty accurate to determine remaining fuel...
