I would not drive with fictitious plates on the cars, that is just asking for trouble. If the plates were previously registered to the cars and are just expired by few months you have a better chance of not getting towed, but I still would not risk it.

Yup NJ sucks! While the DMV was closed my son took one plate off his other car and put on the new one. Car was fully insured and fortunately he wasn’t stopped. I bought a car out of state ( Texas) from a dealer and was blown away when the NJDMV actually called me and set up an appt to get new plates and registration. I was lucky and registered and got my sons plates as well ( cars under my name). It’s brutal at the NJDMV. I was just lucky to not wait and walk in to an appointment. Had to get my car inspected today and that wasn’t bad either with only 3 cars in front of me. The regular DMV had people lined up in the parking lot sitting on beach chairs. Crazy out there!

Just last week I titled my motorcycle, and obtained my mc license, both required in-person only, so I had 2 transactions at 2 different agencies, my actual experience both times:
-get there at 5:15am
-be under #25 on line
-agency opens at 8am
-in the door by 9:30
-out by 10:15
The lines were very orderly and people were distanced and chill. I haven't heard of 'fights' not that I'm listening and no attention to NJ 'news'. There's LEOs all around. That overnight wait, wasn't that when they first re-opened? Manage the stress. Bring your chair iphone ipods and mask. You'll get through it. It is what it is.

Ex wanted to move back home to NJ. The taxes are rediculous. It's been the most expensive state to live in for decades.
Michigan and Virginia make you get appointments which canbe months in the future. In Michigan DMV is the Secretary of State office which is by appointment only. People are driving without plates, possibly insurance, expired licenses ... etc as they wait for their appointment.

Where I live in NY it's all appointment based and they are backed up so instant results won't happen. On a good note you can buy a prepaid priority mail envelope and send in all of your paperwork and you receive a speedy response.
They called and demanded a bill of sales so I had to rush and get that. I returned all of my information at about 2pm on a Thursday and when I checked my mail the next day I had my plates and registration.
