Hope all is well with everyone , i have an 85 coup , and just finished up a rear main seal oi pump job , i would like to put a gear reduction starter back in instead of the monster stater lol , i know 88 - 89 had the new gear reduction starters , does anyone know if they will bolt rite up ? or what would be needed? im thinking maybe i will have to fab the bell - housing cover maybe ? i know there is a great selection on Rock Auto : ) , any help is greatly appreciated ! thank you
I put in an 88-91 starter in my 86 to replace the monster. In my case it didn't need shimming or the hot wire to be extended, but it could. That is the only possible hiccup.
Having an '85 and the 2 piece rear main maybe you need to give thought to those that are out there in the 'market-place'. I would NOT shop Rock Auto but when inquiring any where even 'HERE' on the CF make sure to mention you've a '85 w/2 piece rear main. With a manual transmission I'm sure there will be some fabrication required for the shield if you chose a later 'denso, less with a Tilton style? I've no idea.
*** I believe years ago I had seen it mentioned to expect struggles using the later 'denso on a 2-piece rear main engine. A 'grinder' was mentioned I believe?
I put an 89 starter on my 84. The only issue was about a 1/8 inch hole around where the cone of the old starter entered the dust shield. I used a piece of aluminum flashing tape to keep debris out. The power lead from the battery was about 4 inches short but I could've pulled slack from the bellhousing. I chose to extend it and add a lug on the end with a ring sized properly for the new starter.
I swapped a starter from a later C4 in my 85 4+3. The battery cable wasn't long enough and I had to change it to a longer one. There was a small gap where the nose of the old starter went through the flywheel shield.
Now I'm running one of these because I needed more clearance for a turbo.
I haven't started the car since the recent swap so I have no report on the performance just yet.
There is a small gap in the shield with this one as well.
I mentioned a manual trans only because you mentioned this in your original post

I see 'bellhousing' I immediately think manual trans.
For a converter cover I think you actually ask about a starter that has been used with an 'automatic' and mention converter cover specifically with the 2 - piece rear main.
