Insurance...17 years old!
Im 17 years old, right now i have a 1970 firebird formula 400 but my dream car is to own a 90-96 corvette so I am going to sell the firebird and by next year i am going to buy a vette in those specific years that i like, do you know how much insurance would be? by the time i have the car i will be 18 years old i haven't had a ticket yet no speeding, no accidents NO TICKETS, my dad told insurance company that the firebird was a hobby car so my insurance was only 300 DOLLARS PER YEAR is there anyway i could pay cheap insurance for a vette?

Do you plan on driving it, or just one of those plans for a few hundred miles a year? If you get a real plan it'll be a lot due to your age, but it will probably be less than a Mustang or F-Body typically is.

I'm 17, going on 18 in two months, and my insurance isn't killer. There are two reasons:
A) Insurance nowadays is based more on car safety and frequency of accidents, plus replacement cost, of the car, rather than horsepower ratings. Obviously, age is also the factor. You won't see very much of a decrease in your rates going on 18. The rates drop at 25 years old. Despite popular belief, Corvettes are very safe cars. Maybe not a five-star crash test rate car, but I'll guarantee that they are much safer than your '70 Formula. My advice, go for a '94-'96 to be able to have dual air bags.
B) I'm not listed as the primary driver on the 'vette. My mom's listed as the primary driver on the 'vette, I'm the primary driver on the Suburban, and my dad's on the Tahoe. The way the insurance works, I'm insured on every car, but my rates are based on what I'm the primary driver of. Therefore, if your parents would cooperate, you could get one of them to be the primary driver on your 'vette, and you be the primary driver on their car. The insurance companies do NOT check up on who drives what, they go by what's listed, so you don't have to drive whatever car you're listed as the primary driver with. Good luck.

[QUOTE] 300 DOLLARS PER YEAR/QUOTE]unless you drive less than 3000 mile a year, then you can insure it under classic vehicles--whatever it is called. Otherwise, good luck finding someone to insure your vette for 300 a year. I am almost twice your age, with the vette as the 3rd car, and also have a house with same insurance company. The vette still cost $600 a year to insure.

WOW! you couldn't insure a bicycle in Massachusetts for $600 a year.
Im 46 years old, clean driving record, with 4 vehicles on the road. 1998 Dodge Stratus, 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1986 Corvette, 1996 Suzuki Intruder Motorcycle. My insurance is $4500 a year, $2000 of which is just the Vette!
Note: Its the collision coverage that is so high, if you only want liability it would be 1/2 that.

:skep: Sorry Dude, you are getting riped off! I live in New Mexico (second largest uninsured motorist rates in the U.S., Colorado being #1) and I also have multi car (3) insurance along with renters insurance. I am only paying about $1200 a year. I own a 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara 4x4(a.k.a. Grand Viagra), a 2000 Ford Focus, and my '86 Vette. As for the soon to be 18 year old, bottom line, it is going to be expensive. I guess it is all in what you think expensive is, like the fella that pays $1200 every six months. I think that is very expensive. But if you think you can swing that sort of money then by all means go for it. Just don't be surprised when you get your quote. Also, if the unisured motorist rates are high in you area, be prepared to pay a higher premium. You have to pay for all the bastards that drive without insurance.

Actually he's not. Massachusetts is a "Non-Compete" insurance state. That means no matter what agent you go through it will cost the same.:(

you say you currently have your firebird rated as a hobby car but drive it every day. thats fraud. if you have an accident, and the insurance company finds out your parrents gave them incorrect information pertant to a material fact, they will refund all premiums paid and deny the claim. hears how you do it legally. as a youthful driver, you must be rated on a car in the household. buy $500.00 junker. insure it and the youthful driver for liability only. rate mom or dad on the vette. as a rated driver in the household, you can drive any car in the house. you just dont want to be rated on the vette. its legal, we do it all the time. im in the insurance business, i know how it works. any questions? drop me a line.

$4500 a year still sounds extremely high. I couldn't even afford my Vette if I had to pay that. That's cool that the insurance companies will charge the same but, why the high rates? He has a clean record. The uninsured motorist rate are pretty low. Just very confusing is all. I suppose if I hadn't insured my vehicles through a military insurance company, mine would be pretty high as well.

Call Liberty Mutual and see how much they'll cost. I've had them since I was 17 and my rates were always much lower than others my age.

I currently pay $1530/year for my vette with full coverage. If I moved to Boston that would grow nearly 250%.

Jimminney Cricket! I knew I had good rates, but compared to you they're GREAT! I pay 49 bucks per month and I'm 38! I guess rates really go up when you get old!
