you can get LED 1157 replacement BULBS for way less than that eckler's kit. That eckler's kit replaces the whole lamp assembly.
Unfortunately, the way the 1157 bulb is oriented behind the lense, you can't use the $6 LED bulbs that Advance Auto carries, you have to use a more expensive style like Mervz uses.

When I posted the above I thought he was talking about that $600 LED kit they sell in the catalogs..
The LED bulbs are under 10 bucks apiece I think...not too bad if they work good.

They are more concentrated and brighter then the regular bulbs. Besides being a hell of a lot faster!
The only mod I had to make was get a heavy duty flasher due to the fact that the LED's need less impedance so the stock flasher sol. won't work.
I've never seen the one that Eckler's sells, and at that $$$ I don't think I ever will!

how does an led work? could you connect a bunch of em in a long line and attach hot wire to one end and ground to the other and it work? where can you buy individual bulbs? id like to make my own. i dont like the ecklers kit cause it dont fill up the entire lens. i want the whole red lens to light up when brakes are applied. any info would greatly be appreciated.

Re: LED taillight bulbs anybody try them (Clemson Vette)
LED's are semiconductor devices. Typicaly, a red LED needs about 1.5-1.7 Volts across it, and about 10milliamps of current throught it. When wired in series, each LED drops 1.5V (or whatever they are rated for). So if you wire 3 in series, you get a 4.5Volt drop. Wire 9 in series, you need 13.5 Volts. Remember to add a resistor to limit the current through the string, though, or you will fry them. Parallel 3 strings of 9, and you still are using 13.5Volts across the bunch, but triple the current. I wouldn't recommend trying to make your own brake lights using LED's. Knowledge of circuits is necessary, and I imagine there also could be a liability issue in an accident.

The bulbs I was asking about are 15.99 each I have not yet had to replace a taillight bulb but looks like you would have to take the lenses off to install maybe you do anyway I thought LED replacment bulbs were new had not seen them before

I don't know, would have to see how they look and I'm also afraid it's kinda a ricer thing. There was a booth at Bloomington Gold and Carlisle this year where the guy was selling them. He didn't seem to have a lot of customers when I walked by. He also sells "light-up" valve stem covers and neon stuff. Still smells of rice. :smash:

It's such a hassel to get to the taillight bulbs in my 85 that switching to the Led
may be a good idea when I have to replace one. I believe LED's normaly would hold up better than bulbs, but I just don't know if that's true in this case.

I didn't want to pay the $10 a piece price for the halogen 3rd brake lights so I made an LED 3rd brake light

I just found this website http://www.lunaraccents.com
I was thinking about getting their light bar and converting the third brake light into led. Their 8 inch light bar is about $25 or so, it might be easier then trying to make your own. They also do custom circuit boards, but those seem to be kind of expensive. Might try the light bar and see how it works.
