How do I know if I have clear coat?
My 87 vert has a ton of swirl marks. So, I gave McGuires(?) ScratchX a try. It actually did OK, but the polish pad got very black. Were 87s clear coated? A friends 1990 black C4 seems to have a little metal flake in it and mine is just plain black. Any knowledge would help to know if its be repainted or what.
Thanks
Thanks

Clearcoat came out on the 1981 Corvettes that were built at bowling green. 1981 was the only year Corvettes were made in two plants as they switched from St louis to bowling green. St louis were still painted with enamel. So long answer, Yess your 87 came from the factory with clearcoat. :steering:

Without looking for telltale signs it's been painted, I can easily answer your clearcoat question. If you polish the car with some polish and the color of your car shows up on your rag, then it's not clearcoated. Single stage (regardless if enamels or urethanes) will "rub off" and leave the color of your paint on your rag when you polish it.
If you have any minor scrapes or scratches (I mean real light scratches) and they appear white, then you probably have a clearcoat. When clearcoats scratch, they show white residue.

Thanks for the input, if it came clearcoated, its not any more from what I see.
Was 1986 black RPO 41U a solid black?
(this is very similar to the post on the 96, but very different cars, almost a decade apart)
