Default Lazy Headlight

I've got a lazy headlight on my 88 convertible. I'm not very well versed mechanically, but I was wondering if there's hydrolic fluids involved. There looks like there's some kind of container involved with the pop-up mechanism? I've already tried WD-40 on the moving parts

no there is no fluids, you need a rebuild... Not sure if you need the new gears or just the bushing kit. I'm at work and don't remeber what years would be what and don't have time to look it up. Sorry not a lot of help.. Go to the tech tips and look for it, I know it's there somewhere.. Good luck. :seeya

Just need the bushing kit. Might as well order them for both. One starts going usually the other is not far behind. Cost less than 15 bucks for both and about an hour of your time to install them. Ecklers, Mid America and Corvette Central all carry them.

Thanks, replacing the bushings seems to be the consensus choice. Love this site :D

You may want to look at the gear too. I replaced the driver side bushings and installed a bronze gear at the same time so I wouldn't have to worry about the plastic gear stripping. The bronze gears run $60 and include the bushings. Just another option. I don't want to rebuild them again. Still need to find the time to do the passenger side. It took me about 2 hours or so to do the driver side. Good luck! :smash:

and while thats a nice idea, ive heard that its better to let the $15 plastic gear strip instead of the moter going south.

These work similar to power window gear heads. The bushings inside are the culprit most of the time and not hard to change at all.

Open the hood & watch the motors spin, if they spin after the light has moved you need the bushing kit.

Had the exact same symptoms, over time it will quit working, get the bushing kit. Wait for good weather & fix it.

from

2 88-96 Headlight Motor Repair Kit 444359 4.95 Kit

88-96 factory headlight motors contain a drive gear that is gel packed, and it is this packing that fails and allows the motors to free wheel. The repair kit contains 3 Delrin bushings that replace the gel and allow the motors to operate properly. Easy installation - one kit needed per motor. Instructions included.

I would advise against the bronze gears. The stock nylon gears are designed to strip if the headlight ever has trouble opening, thus saving the headlight motor. The bronze gears will tear up the entire motor and housing, and probably damage the hood. I replaced the bushings in my car and, after fifteen years, the nylon gears are still in perfect shape, so I don't think you ever have to worry about the gears stripping or wearing out.
