They sprayed a black base coat under the color coat (that's the color in the jams). They didn't use enough of the actual color coat (green metallic base) to show up over the black coat. The green base coat is thin enough to be very transparent, letting the black color thru. It probably looked good in the booth (& wet), but changed outside, or started to change when clear was applied, then they just left it (to save time).

Why? Either the painter got it wrong (not enough color coat, don't want to mix any more or can't) and/or he used some black under the base coat (it's cheap) to save money (another Oldie but Goodie!)! That base is probably about $450 to $550 a gallon, they might of used 2 (or 3) quarts instead of 3 (or 4). The additional to be used on the fairings.

The job looks good overall, but now they gotta shoot the jams, another change in the color. Let's see how they deal with that.

If it were me (and I was definitely unhappy with the color), now's the time to push for another color coat. The disadvantage here is: you're adding more paint onto an already painted car. But, if it's not right ...

My .02

The overall looks great but the jams are horrible.

Thank you very much gentlemen for responding to my 1st and 2nd posts along this thread.

I am planning on calling the shop on Wednesday to see how they are coming along with the door jams & the glass top issues.

I have posted also if anyone has pics of a 1990 or 1991 Polo Green Metallic to send them to me. Also, posted in the NorthEast Forum, I have asked if there are any owners with a 90 or 91 that would come by the shop to show them the right color/shade that the car should have been posted.

I am going to re-read all of the posts since there is great information that is listed about overall painting a car and the thoughts on the results of the paint job on my car.

Again, I wish I could buy all of you guys lunchs/dinner, to thank you for your words and support.

Thank you very much and take care...John

Default Polo Green is a puzzle to solve.

John: I to had trouble with polo green matching until I discovered a simple thing. The proper code for the correct polo green. The most common GM code is WA9539 47 but on my 1993 Corvette the GM code is WA9539 45 (M). Also, there seems to be a common error paint shops make. I think what you got was the 47 code instead of the 45(M) code. I also found out Dupli-color BGM 042 Medium Green (M) is the same as WA9539 45 (M) or my Polo Green (M). Both paints matched my car perfectly. I think they painted your car with the WA9539 47 instead of the WA9539 45 (M).

Hey Dave, he probably got this taken care of in 2004. I've replied to some really old posts my self. The last post here was seven years ago.

I think once the school district start classes again, his trolling will go down to 80%.

These problems happen every time someone tries to change from the original red!
