Ok, what is the deal with my sterring wheel?
When I turn the wheel left there is a small "clunk" or light "pop". When I turn the wheel back right, there is another small "clunk" around the same point. I just had a tie rod put in on the left side. What is causing this? The wheel does not move left and right fluently and it is bugging me!! Thanks in advance.

Turn the steering wheel a little to the right (about 2 oclock) then go under the hood and unbolt the column from the knuckle (one bolt but a LONG wobbly extension will be needed). With the key turned to run the column will be unlocked and you can turn it freely. If at this point you still hear/feel it, it's in the column. If not I would take it back to who did the tie rod and make them fix it.

Need more info!!!
Did it do it before the tierods?
Is the noise louder with the engine off (no Power steering assist)?
Is you tilt column loose (pull on steering wheel in a downward motion)?
Check the steering column intermediate shaft (connects column to the rack and pinion). Also check the rag joint (universal joint type item).

This is going to sound stupid... I can't remember if it did this before the tie rod. I guess I am just an idiot.
Um, my tilt on my sterring wheel is all the way down. That is how I like it.
Um, it doesn't seem as bad once the vehicle is on the road and I am turning the wheel.
Let's see...it doesn't seem to have any play on it when I try to move the wheel up and down while it is locked in a tilt position.
MY DAD who is more mechanically inclined than me, just looked and is pretty sure it is the U-joint?? Sound right????

Does it go away after you drive a few miles. If so, it could be what is called "Morning Sickness". Here is a link...

I am not thinking a rack problem... that would result in a queer feeling in the steering, versus clunking.
I concur, it could be a questionable u-joint. it could also just be loose.
Mileage? I would consider removing the column and rebuilding it. Cost is quite low for parts - no more than $150.00... and it will be done! And you can DIY!!

He has pretty much said that he's not all that mechanically inclined, so I would not get into that thing if I was him.
I design the tools that make the car parts and when I took mine apart I looked like this
Do what I said to do with removing the one bolt, that will free everything up and you will be able to feel if the u-joint is bad.

Okay. So I guess I should replace the rack and pinion. Is this something that can be fixed or will I need new parts?
