Default Tint removal.

Besides the normal cussing and throwing things, any other tips to remove this stuff? I'm particularly concerned about the back window on my 96, it has the defroster.

Ehhh. should have googled it. Tons of info on this. Anyway makes for some good conversation.

removal??? Hell I painted my back window black so I could get the darkest tint available

just playin... I wouldn't worry about the rear defrost. All of my cars have tinting over the rear defrost and it works fine.

I would take it to a tint shop and have them remove it. I think it would cost around $100. Cause if you damage the defroster, you need a new rear window.

I live in **** PA, this was originally a Florida car and tint is way too dark to pass inspection. It has to go.

You can use and adhesive remover like OOPS! or Goofoff. Spray on the adhesive remover and wipe with 0000 grade steel wool. I've done it that way quite a few times. Don't use a razor blade on the rear window, too much of a chance of cutting a defroster line.

If it came from The Land of Chad you can bet your last octane that the film is baked on like it was a part of the glass. Mine was a major Pain in the Butt. Be very careful or your defroster will be toast. I totally destroyed mine.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that tint no longer falls under the inspection codes. It is, however, illegal under the vehicle code. I've never had a problem getting my car through inspection.

The defroster can be repaired. In fact I need to do that when i get the tint removed. There's a procedure written out in the manual.

Either way it still needs to come off. It's all scratched up and the back tint is actually puckered around window mounts and such. It just looks like crap and if I take all the time to remove it, it ain't going back on.

Ok for one Tint can be as dar as you want on the BACK windows. It's the sides that will get you in trouble.
And on to the answer of the day......trust me on this. It's not that hard but you have to make a decision.
When you peel the top layer of tint off.Take note whether it comes off easy or comes off in tiny pieces. If tiny bits are what you can only get then take it somewhere. It's gonna be a PITA.
here we go..pay attention!!

Put the car in the sun for a few hours with the back glass getting the sun.Once it warms up you will need to pull it into the shade.
1.pull the film of tint off.slowly and steady will get best results.
2.Take a solution of Glass cleaner....(the trick here is to make your own.HIGH ammonia is what eats the glue off) Spray it liberally on the glue that is left under the tint film and get the entire window and keep it wet...it will start to melt the glue...take rags and wipe it off in a one-way pattern.
You'll get the hang of it...it's kind of a timing thing. It's messy more than anything else.
be careful of your paint on the car...some paintjobs are not to tough and can streak with window cleaner running down them.Easy fix but why bother goofin a good wax job up.
good Luck

Very simple.. I've done it a million times, and am going to be doing it to my Vette's rear window this weekend (getting done seamless). The heat gun, a light scuff pad, some warm soapy water and/or adhesive remover, and in about an hour it's a done deal. Just take your time, don't apply too much pressure(once the tint is off, and your taking the adhesive off) and you'll be fine.

On side windows, or glass without defrost lines, rip the tint off(with heat, it'll come off in one big pc), Windex and a razor blade and your home free.

100% correct!!!! strong solution of amonia is the best for removing tint adhesive. Believe it of not windex will do the job just fine but you will have to do it several times. Just get the window soaking wet with windex or amonia and let it sit for a while then soak it again (of coarse this is after you peal the tint off). then use a terry cloth towel while the window is dripping with windex and it will come right off. I retint my trucks about once every 2 years cause the tint fade out. This is exactly how I remove mine.

I've been putting this job off myself. I bought my 92 all ready tinted and its turned to crap. Next time it will be 3M tint ONLY. The 3M last forever. It doesn't turn purple like all the cheap stuff.

I have to agree - I ONLY use 3M - It's the only tint I've never had a problem with fading.

Cool tips guys. I'm going to fully remove the back glass turn it upside down and go at it without fear of ruining any paint or interior items. Same for the sides, it'll also give me a chance to go over the tracks, door hardware, and any miscellaneous items that need taken care of while the doors are apart. Kill two birds with one stone type thing.

You just said exactly what I was going to suggest. Take the glass out and work on a capretted surface. Everyone else already covered the tips I was going to say. I wasn't aware that tint was an issue in your area. I thought you didn't want it on there or thought it would interfere with your defrost. I guess I really need to learn how to read... where did my huked on fonicks go???

I think my Torch Red 96 LT4 will be a cop magnet enough without giving them another reason to pull me over. And in all seriousness I can see their point, how would you like to walk up to a blacked out windowed car not knowing what the driver could be pointing at you?

I suppose since I'm getting older I'm respecting the law a lot more and just want to comply to make both our lives easier.

In PA here we have this support you local chiefs of police thing. They call you and ask for donations and when you donate you get this little sticker you can put in your back window. It's not a get out of jail free ticket but I know it's saved my but once.

Can you get away with giving them donuts instead of cash?

Seriously, my rear window defroster has a bad spot on it that needs to be fixed. One of these days, I'll get off my lazy butt, peel off the bubbled tint, and fix the defroster. I had a place down here tint my camaro. They did a great job. It was seamless, and it lasted for the three years that I had the car.

Good luck peeling your tint.
