Default 3.54 or 3.73 1/4mi. with A4

I know this has been beaten to death but my forum search didn't supply an answer.

I've got a stock '92 A4 (2.59 gears) and want to change my gear ratio.

I currently run a 14.0 sec 1/4 and would to hear your guess on what my 1/4 would become with a 3.54 and with a 3.73

Additionally, I'm sure that if I choose to go with 3.73 gears I'll need to go Dana 44 but would I need the 44 if I go 3.54?

Thanks,

Mark

You don't need Dana 44 with 3.73s.

If you are stock I would go 3.73 and stay with the 36. I know a lot of people would say that's too much but you will be bored with 3.54 in weeks.

You will get better peformance with 3.73 given good traction

If you are going to spend the money go with 3.73.
I had them in my camaro with a 4 speed and you have 2 more gears.
I run 3.33 D44 auto and I still don't use 4 th at the strip.
You at a min will kock off atleast 1/2 sec in 1/4 mile

Oh, I should mention that I will not be living at the track. I'm the type that will go to the drag strip once each time that I add a major mod (not often), though I do like to get on it in town a few times a week (0-70 is probably a typical fun run in town).

Btw, when would a 3.73 diminish in power vs my old 2.59s? i.e. is there a point (say around 105mph) that the 2.59s would be pulling stronger or would the 3.73s pull stronger almost all the way up to their top end?

You wouldnt notice a top end difference unless you spend alot of time over 120-130mph. Thats not an issue to base your decision on.

3.54s for you if you plan to regularly drive the car, and a 2400-2600 stall TC to go with it. Together, they should drop no less than .5 off your ET, if you can launch with a good set of tires its possible to get 12.9x's with just this stuff.

I went from 13.7's to 13.3's with my 2:59 to 3:54 gear swap. I was not bored with my 3:54's. It should be mentioned however that either of the two combinations you mentioned in a Dana 36, coupled with DR's, is just an explosion waiting to happen. It could very well detonate on your very first launch, or on your 1000th launch. There's no way to tell, but I am on my SECOND set of Dana 36 gears. My 3:54's exploded on the street with Dr's and my 3:73's have had no abuse to speak of. Good luck.

Before I did my D44 swap I had 3:73's in my 36...I drove it everyday as well...no problems and I had it up to 139 mph once...you can cruise at 75 mph and will be around 26-2700 rpm with 3:73's...they will help you at the strip if you can hook decently...

I've retired mine from daily driving at this point...the 44 came out of a 94 with 3:45 gears...took me one month with those to find out they did not measure up to the 73's...had to pull the diff again and put in new 3:73's...happy boy now... good luck

If you are on the street more, go with 3.45's, if at the track more the 3.73's will be fine. Granted there isn't much difference between the two.

I'm getting 60's in the 1.67 range where those with 3.73's are getting 1.61 60's, both of these numbers come from stock LT1's and both had 2800 stall torque converters.
