HI
can the water pump drive seal be replaced "Without" removing the timing cover? On a 93 corvette
Thanks
JIM
Yes, notice in this pic http://www.digitalcorvettes.com/phot...pti_Damper.JPG
at the top of the seal there is a relief in the cover for a small screwdriver to pry out the seal.
You will need something to protect the seal as you install it on the shaft. There is a tool made by Kent-Moore but my dealership did not carry it. I replaced all the seals in the cover when I had it off for the cam install.
Also the seal must point inward to work properly.
Good Luck.
I used a impact socket the same size to install the seal into the the cover, that was the easy part.
The hard part was getting the seal on the WP shaft properly. The replacement seal is designed differently than the OE. This makes it harder to install on the WP shaft.
Kent-Moore has a tool that helps the seal onto the shaft, I did not feel like waiting on the tool, I was able to install the seal with out it, but it wasn't easy.
Here's the KM site http://www.spxkentmoore.com/
Many people think they can install the seal without the Kent-Moore seal protector, but not many really get it right. It is quite difficult to keep the inner seal lip from flipping over in the process without the cone shaped tool. And, it is more difficult to tell if you did get it.
I'll never try it again -- not worth it. I bought it for the next time.
Same thing here. I went through 3 of them before I got it right. I used a socket the same size as the shaft to open the seal up.It is hard to make the seam stay on the inside of the shaft when you install it. If it get pushed out when installing it, it will rip the seal and it is no good. Thats why I went through 3 of them. It was easier to install it on the car in my opinon
