I changed my oil about 700 miles before I stored my 93 for the winter. I have a driving school that I am going to on 4/15. Would you do an oil change first??? M1 is expensive and it seems pretty durable. I just don't want to waste $$$ or resources. Is it really necessary to change the oil right away?
There is no need to change your oil after winter storage.
The reason to change it before storage is to get the contaminants ( combustion by products of water and acid) out of the engine so it does not internally rust over the winter.
Personally, I change my oil just before I put the car away for the winter, only letting it idel long enought to circulate the oil and therefore minimizing the production of water and acids.
As long as the car was inside where the air was reelatively dry (like a garage) you shuld be fine. I would drive the car for at least a half hour at freeway speeds for a few times to bring the oil up to operating temps to get rid of any moisture that may have been trapped inside the motor during storage.
This will also give you a chance to look for any new leaks that may occur due to gasket shrinkage or expansion/contraction of seals.
