Too me this HP figure sounds high but I am not sure.

Also a turn key package costs 11,899.00 which includes the above plus

Any input from you guys would help a lot, Thanks Chad

What block are they using, or did I miss that?

I really appreciate the time it took you to post all those specs, but you know what I'd do?

I'd grab myself three or four catalogs, Summit, Performance Automotive Warehouse, JEGS, etc., and sit down and price each and every part they're supplying and then do the math.

From that you can see how much they're charging for labor/profit. You'll also be able to see whether it's a "deal", reasonable or whether you're gettin' hosed.

If they are useing the Crane Cam equivelant to the GM 847, you are about 30 hp off, but I know Crane has other cams. It is just that the cam is popular

If they do everything that's on the quote, I would think that would be a great deal. Do they dynotune it also?

Enjoy destroying your transmission!

I think alot of the cost is what they do in house which is everything needed for the block, CNC machine, Honing, flow machine, etc they have everything to build a motor correctly.

What I am not sure about is the HP #. He says they regularly tune and dyno the engine at ADS here in Phoenix.

From my research here on LT4 motors it is pretty hard to get 450 to the ground naturally aspariated. But he has been building Race motors for 20 years.

Do you all think the HP is acheiveable assuming an aggressive cam and the parts listed?

Also he said it was in the 10.2 compression range for our 91 crap gas.
Thanks Chad

He is in the process of getting his engine dyno up and running, but I do know the spec everything and I'll find out if they dyno the engine and prove the HP rating. Chad

The machine work should only involve doing the block and that shouldn't even amount to $500. The crank, rods and pistons should be new and need no machine work.

My gut tells me it's NOT a good deal; but I've got the sense that's not what you want to hear. Once you add up the cost of the parts and post the sum, we'd all know more about what they're making on that package.

To me, ten thousand dollars for a 383 isn't a good deal. For a 540 or 555 Big Block I'd say YEA!, but not a little 383.

550 Hp out of a 383 calls for around 1.44 HP per cubic inch. Normally aspirated, you're not going to get that much unless the engine is extremely radical. Again, I suspect that's not what you want to hear.

What about ignition and carb/FI?

All I can suggest is Be Smart and do your homework before deciding to plop down your money.

I have the same set up and have 14 thousand in it and it only makes a little over 438 hp.
Which AFR heads I have 220 and 11 to 1 pistons.
I CAN"T use guide plates and had to use shaft rockers to the tune of $1,100.If I had it to do over, I would have gone with a 434.
They make one that will fit in al vet.

I have 7K in my motor and I built it my self so the price quoted for a 383 LT1 w/AFR heads is not a bad deal. More Performance gets 10K for there package and LPE is around the same. Another point as I stated earlier with a little higher CR then my set up and a bump up in cam size 550 FWHP is not going to be a problem, again its done every day. My set up is 10.7:1, and a fairly small, for a 383, cam and I am right at 500 FWHP. Again if you want an idea of what these combos will make in terms of FWHP/TQ give a couple of other know vendors a call such a LPE or More. If you plan carefull and make sure you choose a combo where all the parts work togeather the LT platform will make serious HP/TQ and still be compleatly streetable. Again the 10K is not just for the parts (Around 7K same as my motor), but also for the experience of the builder. RED, I feel for you, I f I spent that kind of $$$$ and the motor didn't perform as the builder stated I would be steamed but not all builders are the same, I aounder about the choice of heads for your combo they seem a bit big I would have went no bigger then the 210's. The reason I build my own motors is because I am a PITA to deal with as a customer and tend not to trust anything unless I see it done or do it my self. One last note The machine work with splayed mains will be a lot more then $500 with ballancing, deck work ect..., (Ask me how I know). Good luck and again it sounds like you are realy doing your home work.

And that is W/O Splayed mains, You can get a block hot tanked and bored for less the $500 but for any motor that is going to be 400+HP it should be Decked and the Mains align honed. To do a bolck right it is normaly 1K plus.

I bought 4-Bolt billet caps for the 3 middle main caps, but they are not splayed.

The quoted price is very simlar to price charged by Golens Engines for a similar 383, L-98, turnkey w/dyno testing (I think 460Hp, 500+ torque). Golens also builds LT-4's but I did not check those prices. Parts is parts, so to say. Sounds "in the ballpark" and competitive to me. The differences in HP will be in cam profiles, compression ratios, head porting, etc.

He won't need all that because all of his parts, except the block, will be NEW. For 10 grand they'd better be!

Since they're claiming this to be a selected block, I'm thinking he'll only need machine work on the block:

Cleaning,

Bore/Hone,

Decks checked and

Line hone checked.

The remainder of the work, like installing cam bearings, etc., doesn't come under the heading of Machine Work.

Jake
