Default Tire ? How much bigger can I go? (275 vs. 285-40R17)

My baby needs some new shoes. I have a 90 vert and it takes 275-40R17 stock, but I was wondering if I can go to 285-40R17 without causing myself any headaches.
  • Anyone do this?
  • Does it change your speedometer/odometer readings?
  • Any clearance/rubbing problems?
  • Handling differences?

Thank you in advance.

I have a lowered 94. I wanted some black Amolds, but the ones I found that I could afford were all 9.5s. So I switched the stock turbine wheels front (255s) to back(285s) and drove around for a day or so. Other than looking funny and losing some traction, the 285s on the front never rubbed. My plan is to replace the current 255s on the front with some 285s as soon as they wear out. If you go to http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/asset...ce_ta_kdws.pdf you will find overall dimensions for the BFG KDWS. Those are what I run, great on dry, good in rain, not so good in snow...Vette in Snow? Yes it happens!

No rubbing, very small speedo difference....can't comment on tracking as the thing felt funny with narrow wheels on back.

I went from 275s to 285s and think it was a mistake. It didn't cause any real problems, but I think I lost a little low end grunt from the taller tire and it just didn't look quite right.

  • Fits fine.
  • Shouldn't be any noticeable differences. 4% wider section width and 1.2% bigger circumference isn't detectable by butt-o-meter, unless you're Schumacher.
  • Section width is not tread width. Tread width of some 275s is wider than some 285s.
  • When speedo says 60mph you'll really be going 60.7.

Thanks for showing me how to do a list. Never done that before.

I just went the Yok's AVS ES 100's, Intalled them today on my newly polished rims.

Those tires have a tread patch of 10.6 inches, and are as wide as most 285's on www.tirerack.com . I would highly recommend them. Go to Tirerack, $130 a tire. I doubt you will find a better tire for the cash.

Im using 275/40 ft. 285/40 rear
The tread width on my 275 is wide but actual contact area is about 91/2" the 285 is approx.10" contact area (BFG KDW)
I dont feel any diff. in grunt or any other way, Then again Im not Sshumacher

I'm running 285-40-17 Goodyear GS-D3s all around on 9.5" wheels. It just feels natural, and I have no interference issues.

The car does follow imperfections in the road, but you have the same thing with 275s.

Sounds like there are no advantages of running the bigger 285 tires and that it screws up your odometer (more miles than the car actually has) and speedometer.

I called around and it looks like Discount Tire here will pretty much match the price of Tire Rack - just the sales tax is extra. I pretty much will do it thru them to avoid the hassles.

My delimna is that I want to support US manufacturers - and buy Goodyear - the last US owned tire manufacturer. But a set of F1's will run $1005.36 vs. $656 for the Yokahama ES100's. Damn I can really use the $350 savings. But I think it is un-American to have *** tires on the American beast. I believe my best bud bought a set of these Yoka's and is really happy with them. But damn it - I am tired of us sending all our jobs overseas. I bet I'll get the Goodyears

I'll wait til next week.

I believe the odometer will actually record slightly lower mileage with larger diameter tires.

I've heard great things about the goodyear eagle GS-D3. I would have put them on my BMW in place of the pilot sports if I'd been replacing all 4. Also, the GS-D3 should be less than $200 a tire.

Those aren't remotely comparable tires.
